Just got my new guitar... KNOW WHAT?

WitBlitz

Hi guys...
So you just got your new Electric guitar out of the box? Know what?!!
Obviously tune the guitar... ? But what then? I see the guys talk about "setup" the guitar?? Or can i Just plug-in an play??!

If all goes well I will get my new Ibanez GSAS26FM tomorrow... my first Electric guitar! Cant wait!!!!! 8)

DonovanB

It should be set up relatively ok from the shop so you wont need to worry about that yet. a syou get more picky then it becomes an issue.

just jam it for a while until GAS comes back

mattayou

You may not need to setup the guitar at all. All my latest additions (Ibanez SA08, Squiers Tele & Ibanez AW40 have not deeded to be setup and have sounded great out of the box!

WitBlitz

So the default, out of the box setup should be just fine for me... ? Just tune, plug in and jam?! ?

mattayou

Yes I would say so, unless you struggle to get the guitar in tune etc, which is unlikely.

When I got Eli's Taylor, we drove straight to my tech, and asked him to "look it over"...... there was a very slight buzz on the low E string, he got out his box of tricks, 2 minutes and it was perfect......the point, Eli and I would probably have been so excited and not even notice it, so why not?

Now with my brand new PRS STANDARD 24, you would think (and the little leaflets tell you it has already been factory set-up for 9s) that that should be fine, well Mario (or whatever his name is) at Andy McGibbons spent about 2 and half hours to set it up the way I wanted with 9s ......But then again, yours may be perfect out of the box........Just a thought...... ? ?

May you have many happy and satisfying years with your new guitar.... 8)

Thanks aubs1 ? I have a feeling that this is just the start of many to come... :?

Was Lethe behind this purchase? ?

Nice-looking guitar you're getting, Aja - congrats!

Well you should tune it, then plug in and play. "Set up" is usually a matter of adjustments. A guitar that is not set up can still be played.

If you find that there are buzzes, that the guitar is physically hard to play, or that the guitar does not stay in tune as you move around the neck (EG the open strings are in tune, at some point on the neck the guitar is not in tune any longer) then you probably need a set up.

If you're an experienced player then you will probably have an idea of what you like, what to look for in terms of problems etc. If you're less experienced then you will pick up more knowledge with time.

Make sure all the controls work without making a noise. Make sure the thing stays in tune. Listen for buzzes. If it buzzes then is it all strings? All positions? Certain strings? Certain positions? Check all the pickups work, and all the combinations that the selector switches should give you work.

Where did you buy it? Some shops will do a reasonable set up before delivery. Some will say, play it for a while then let us know if you want things changed.
Then enjoy.

Probably you're thinking about Mando Silva. A very good guitar tech. Now just up the road at Music Connection.
