rei Hi all, Don't know if this is the right section? I need some advice please. I have the following gear: - Gretsch G5235 Pro Jet - Fender Vibro Champ XD (5watt ClassA) Tube Amp - Boss MT2 MetalZone I play rhythm in a Hardcore/Metal band. Until now, I've been using my amp as monitor with line-out going to the PA. But I'm looking for a heavier sound with a more hardcore umpff (if you know what I mean). Do I get rid of the amp (can get round R3000 - R3500) and invest in something like a Line-6 POD with built in amp modeling and run straight to the PA? Also, what pickups do you suggest I get for the guitar.. My budget is also a bit limited. Around R5000 if I sell the amp.. Thank you in advance!
AlanRatcliffe A hollowbody Gretsch guitar with minibuckers into a Fender amp - unusual choices for a hardcore player. ? There are no hard and fast rules though, so if you can make it work in that context, go for it. Look at Ted Nugent using a Gibson Byrdland for heavy rock... While the Champ XD is a surprisingly flexible little amp, it's not the best choice for heavy stuff, IMO. I'd say if you have the PA power available, you're on the right track with the POD (or a Boss GT-8 or -10). It will give you a lot more choice a far as getting the sound you're after and even if you upgrade to a real amp later, the modellers like the PODs and the GTs can give you a good idea of which amps you should be looking at to get the sound you are chasing. Francis Viviers just posted an XT live in the Classifieds for R3K, BTW. You'll probably find the MT-2 becomes obsolete when you have something like a POD. Hang off on pickups for now, there are a limited range of minibuckers available and it'll be good to see what you get from the guitar with a new/different amp before you start thinking pickup swaps. You might even decide to get a different guitar.
