Native Instruments Guitar Rig 3

AlanRatcliffe

I've been using GR since version 1. I got guitar Rig 3 on Thursday and used it for my workshops on Saturday. I turned up with guitar, laptop bag and footpedal (Behringer FCB1010), plugged directly into the small PA supplied and was away.

So far, so good: no problems and the new amps and FX are nice. In particular, I can tell the new Orange amp model is going to make me happy (with a bit of tweaking) for a Marshally tone without the harsh upper mids of a Marshall. The Ultrasonic (Uberschall model) finally adds a good modern high gain amp, which isn't usually my kind of thing but sounds good enough that I'll definitely experiment with it. The tape Echo is a great addition to the FX too.

I need to spend a lot more time with it, but the first impressions are good.

Sounds awesome.

What did this set you back?

AlanRatcliffe

Nothing - I just got an endorsement. ?

NorioDS

Hehe, ok then. What would it set me back?

AlanRatcliffe

I'll find out and let you know.

NorioDS

Thanks man ?

By the way, thanks for letting me know about muz.co.za and soundz.co.za -- very nice sites and great to see someone out there doing it right.

Here's the info on GR3 pricing from the GR agents:

We should receive our first GR3 Rig Kontrol packages late next week, as it seems SA was at the back of the line here ;(
The suggested retail price will be in the vicinity of R5795 to R5995.
GR3 software sells for R1795 & is available from Dave Smith at Turnkey Music, in Randburg. Tel: 011 792 8272.

Those'll be retail prices, so you should be able to negotiate for some discount.

Yowsers!

Sounds like something I should look at later ?

Not bad for the software edition though. If you have a decent audio interface with a high Z input, you're already most of the way there. I do that and have a Behringer FCB1010 MIDI floorboard for control (which also has an extra rocker pedal over the Rig Kontrol).

The main advantage of the Rig Kontrol version is that RK is designed specifically for GR, you just plug in one USB cable and it works as a DI box, interface and a MIDI floorboard all in one.

Crikey, Alan! You're going WAAAAY over my head.

I reckon I must come visit you in CT and you can show me all of this cool stuff, how it works and what it all means.

Or just run a workshop or something but PLEASE give me notice so I can organise to come down. I'm sure I'd love all this stuff if I understood it. Right now, I just understand guitars, amps, effects pedals & cables. Everything else kinda goes whoosh ?
