Anybody know whether we have any flamenco guitarists performing in Cape Town? Some venue where they perhaps perform on a regular basis?

I'm a bit out of touch lately, but the Flameno guys around CT used to all fight for the one gig at Cantina Tequila (go figure...).

yeah there are watch out for a band in CT i think they called "H2O" they way hot and prob in my humble opinion the CT flamenco band to see... 2 guys i never seen em live but i play at a flamenco venue here in Jhb and the venue plays their cd in breaks and they sound great ...i'm looking forward to catching a live show and meeting em sometime....
unfortunately some bands play latin american / portugeuse music and call it flamenco ..... so it is a slightly misunderstood genre to most venues and punters out there....so anything with a nylon and percussion and foreign lyrics is called flamenco heheheh
and watch the gig guide for performances by classical guitarists....as sometimes classical guitarists will perform a few flamenco songs but it's truly not the same approach and feel as watching true flamenco players ......... there's a different approach and technique but if there's nothing else about it's a great backup ....
in reality think there's only a handful of flamenco musicians in the country... and H2O are definitely worth seeing
btw if you go to durban there's a fabulous player..... i forget his name but he heads the music dept in dbn university and is a true flamenco player and astoundingly talented .....works a lot with flamenco dancers..... anyway i'm doing a lunchtime recital at Dbn university in sept so i'll hopefully get to spend some time with him ... and pick his brain.....
good luck in your search for flamenco and please mail /message me details of any flamenco acts you do find as i'm always keen to network with other players.....

True about the Latin thing. But then, true Flamenco is actually support music for dancers - many traditionalists view people like Paco de Lucia as breakaway upstarts!
I just remembered... keep an eye on the concert venues like KWV, they have proper Flamenco troupes in once or twice a year - usually imported from Spain.

Demetrio Fernandez? Not the head of the music school, but Willem studied under him for a while at UKZN and said he's amazing.

Not Siadiq Kahn? I think its Ishmael something. can't find the name anywhere.
Demi Fernandez is awesome!!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the duo Keira is referring to is CH2.
Very good and they released an album with the Soweto String Quartet.

Great - someone also told me that there are a couple of hot flamenco players in the Malay community here in CT.
Just wondered whether our Flamenco players don't advertise themselves that much because I read somewhere that Flamenco is an exclusive and intimate club. Not for the public at large, so one has to probe to find these performances. Interesting that Flamenco guitarists are regarded as upstarts haha - as they're just the back up. Think I'd like to klap a few flamenco dancers with their castanets for even THINKING that after seeing the maestro Paco de Lucia - and that's just one of them. I find some of his music - (not that musack he played for a while) - mind boggling. Anyway thanking everyone for the friendly info!

I dont know but my wife may. She teaches Spanish dancing and on some sort of comittee or something where they get together like once a month or so and drink tea and talk about stuff (I guess dancing stuff) with people who fly in from all over the country. So I'll ask her and post if she knows. Right now she wont answer me because she is sleeping. Sometimes she wont answer when she's awake but I'll give it a go. Know what, she will probably know the Spanish dance teachers down there as she studied at UCT many years ago. If you get hold of these okes they will tell you fosho,ne? As I say, I'll have a go when she wakes up.

I've been battling to get onto the site - it lags for some reason - maybe have to raise it as a topic. Thanks Ray for that info. That would be really exciting to see the show with the dancers and everything. I lokked at the site but couldn't establish whereabouts they perform and so on ... perhaps they move around? Anyway thank you for that. I will keep an eye on that site as well. ?

So far I now have this info - there's a Cape Town based flamenco guitarist named Sadiq Kahn - but don't see any upcoming dates at the moment. Then there's Durban based Demi Fernandez - more news of later? Then Keira mentioned a flamenco band H2O or it may be CH2. The other thing to look out for are concerts - some at KWV. And the Spanish Dance connection www.larosa.co.za. Oh yes and some classical guitarists play a bit of Flamenco. So now I can search around and try and establish some dates and venues. Anymore suggestions welcome!
