Hi guys
Great site you have here. I only found it tonight and decided to join.
My Gibson ES-335 was stolen by a conman in Joburg. Ill post the serial number soon, here is a pic in the meantime. Any help in finding this guitar would be greatly appreciated.
I hope its appropriate to post this here. I'll post pics of my other guitars and amps in future
Thanks everyone
Reinhard

Hi Reinhard
Ouch! My sympathies. What was it? A classified ad scam? I've heard of a few like that recently - all involving Gibson guitars.
Reinhard
Hi Alan
Yes it was. I didn't know it was a check the guy deposited into my account, otherwise I would never have sent the guitar. Expensive lesson to learn, but Im hoping it will surface. No luck with the insurance company or the police so far, so Im hoping some other gear head might spot it.

There is some talk that it's a gang going for specific, small but valuable items and that they are ending up outside the country...
There are times when I can agree with the chopping off of the hands thing for thieves...
Reinhard
I would love to get my hands on the guy. I spoke to a gentleman from Stellenbosch this past weekend who was conned in a similar fashion.

I had that happen to me a while ago, but with a PC. I really needed that money and so began my trip down poor-man's lane! (Seriously, this one event changed my financial position from OK to horrible in a day and it's never truly recovered!)
Some signs to look out for:
- They're always in a hurry and aren't happy waiting a week.
- They target desperate sellers who are also in a hurry.
- They usually deposit the wrong amount, usually more than the price.
- They will promise you EFT or whatever you ask for but the money won't be "cleared" in your account.
- On collection, someone other than who you spoke to will collect.
- They don't like meeting outside police stations.
All of the above should ring bells and make you pull back from a sale. You might need it bad but rather keep your gear than make a "false" sale and end up with nothing!
Reinhard, I really hope you find your axe in time or that insurance changes its mind!!!

Man.. That is terrible.
I have a friend who was conned when trying to buy a car. In the end he lost 30 grand... ouch, and he had been saving for it for some time..
Alan, I agree, we need to adopt some eastern forms of punishment for criminals.

That sucks man. That's a beautiful 335.
I've done a few transactions locally and I always specify bank transfers or the cash must clear before I will ship anything.
I'm always checking around for gear. Post that serial number and I'll keep an eye out for it.
There's another good lesson for all of us. Insure your equipment ! I would cry crimson tears if someone stole my guitars and they weren't insured.

Hey guys, how about a specific topic on this forum, say under a heading "Stolen Gear" where serial numbers and pics are posted. The more of us looking out for each other's stuff, the better the chance of getting it back and catching the a...holes that rob us, I figure.
Reinhard
Thats a great idea Riaan.
JoeyBones, all my high end guitars are insured, it is definitely a necessity. I still have to insure my vintage amps though.
The serial on my ES335

I've just added a "Stolen Gear" category over at www.musicads.co.za - please feel free to post about it there.
I had the category there before, but I think it was lost in a reshuffle sometime without me noticing.
Reinhard
Thanks Alan, Ill definitely post there

Eish...
I rekon it's long gone out of the country :'(
It looks just like mine.. I would die a million deaths rather.
My saxophone was stolen the same way, cheque bounced... was about 5 years ago. You live and you learn hey...
That was a R25k saxophone..
