HI ALL,
so i finally got the guitar i have wanted for 3 years, they dont come into our country anymore so its hard to find. LOVELY epi les paul custom in alpine white.
Anyways being a strat man i have run into trouble with epi. With new strings on the tuning is VERY unstable.
Put my favourite gauge on 10-52 and the 6th and 5th string DONT sit in the nut (and even the bridge maybe) correctly.
So my dilema is: do i try file the nut down (using a string off cut or something in the garage) or do i change to regualr 10's.
If i file it down to fit the 10-52 will i be able to use the nut for regular 10's at a later stage? as i am still not sure what gauge i will prefer on the epi.
thanks

If you like 10-52s on your other guitars, you're not going to like lighter on an Epiphone - usually you would go heavier on a Gibson scale guitar than you use on your Fender scale guitars.
Use a key file to widen the slots - strings don't cut through a nut very well (just as well, if you think about it ?).

? just as well yes! LOL now that i think about it,it was a stupid idea.
a key file? is that just a really small file? could i get that from builders wharehouse or something?

Yeah. Also called watchmaker's files or needle files. Usually sold as a set, but you can get sets pretty cheap from most hardware stores.

Also be careful going to lighter strings on a LP could cause problems with your necks relief, in effect you get straighter neck
because less tension is required to tune lighter strings.
So you may encounter problems with fret buzz on the thicker strings and adjusting string heights will affect your playability.

I use 9's on my LP. I don't like heavy strings on anything and with a slight intonation adjustment it's great.
