You guys are nailing it so far...

+1. That's the crux of the biscuit. Expensive parts slapped together will not have much advantage over a standard production-line instrument. One of those "devil in the details" things.

Just for the choice you have as opposed to a store bought.
+1. If you want anything not available on a production-line instrument, it's the only way to go.

I think the more you spend on parts and the pricier you get the more you saving in the end. So to build something like a 'squire' quality would not be worth while cause the shipping alone will be R1000 for the parts?
+1. I generally add the shipping in as part of the cost. So inexpensive partscaster parts end up more expensive anyway (even using the cheapest parts available) - cost-wise, not too far removed from doing it properly and building something more like a Custom Shop Guitar.
Then it depends on who you know or have the means to finish the guitar... yourself and properly? that can cost you anything from R10k I rekon?
This is where the "hidden" costs come in. Fine if you can do the finish, assembly and setup yourself - that's a huge saving. But otherwise you must factor in a luthiers costs there. And yes, about R10K.
If you really want I can give you a ball park figure, PM me.
Everything down to the last screw, finishing supplies and the case, no expenses spared, including delivery, but still sans the labour? An edumicated guess R15-18K for the parts, unless you managed to get certain items at special prices.
