In normal use, you don't usually turn down that low. Full volume should be set to get the most drive you need and then you turn down a few notches just to tame it a bit. If you want to alternate between very clean and very distorted sounds, you should be using channel switching on the amp or a distortion/overdrive pedal.
Especially with a Les Paul you have 2 volume controls to mess with, its normally easier to leave them alone. I sometimes play with the volume on the strat or my Ibz but a LP would be murder.
