He was a great, active man. To my knowledge he was still gigging actively (Weekly at a bar). Perhaps his time was due. Either way, he must have lived a fulfilled life. Not to mention his name is imortalized..

I think I must be psychic. I was under the impression he died about six months ago.
Ah well. Lovely fellow. Wonderful guitar player. Good story teller too. I read the fantastic interview in an old 70's guitar player in which he talked about his relationship with Django - helping him to get back on his feet while on a visit to Paris.

Really sad news, man was a tonal genuis! Modern recording owes just about everything to him.

What sad news...
The guy truly is a legend.
Manfred-Klose
a true pioneer in the music world.
Not many poeple can put their name to a world famous guitar and invent multi track recording at the same time.
RIP.

Wasn't he very influencial(Sp?) with pickup designs as well?
AlanRatcliffe
Not with pickups, no. That honour is probably more due to Seth Lover.
needleshy

An extract from Will Hodgkinson's "Guitar Man"
I told the manager that I had flown over from England specially to meet Les Paul. "So what?", he said. Would it not be possible to talk to him properly, one on one?
"Sure," he replied.... "Get in the line with everybody else."
...
When it was my turn I told him about my mission to learn the guitar and understand it's significance in time to play for an audience in two month's time. He nodded in a way that announced he had heard it all before. I asked him to reveal the secret of playing the guitar.
"Practice."
He stared at me as if I were simple. I looked into his eyes for clues... I asked if there was anything more I should know.
"Learn from a good teacher. Listen to a good record and find out what the guitarist is doing. The toughest part is to develop your own style and not sound like anybody else, but that comes to you in time. Come on! Let's keep this line moving!"

Sad to hear about the passing of one of musics true legends.

94 is a good innings. and to have achieved so much is a great tribute.

Guess what I'll be playing tonight...
Have no idea about his guitar playing skills, but man did he design one simple, sexy guitar.
Dirk
He was my grandfather's inspiration to start playing guitar, and then my grandfather became my inspiration to start playing, so I guess, if it wasn't for him, I might not have learned to play at all.. :'(
I might just join Giggsy and pull out the LP tonight ?

RIP Les Paul
If it weren't for him my world would have been a completely different place, both guitar- and studio-wise. I think it's safe to say that I wouldn't be doing what I do for a living if it wasn't for him. In a world where the title "legend" is completely overused he was the real deal.
Reinhard
RIP Les Paul, thanks for designing some of the greatest guitars ever....
