Yeah, dude, I'm distressed by the amount of peer pressure that goes on at this place. You don't HAVE to have a huge array of mods at all. Especially if the expense is not going to bring any major, noticeable differences (to you - and you're the one who matters). Playing guitar does not have to empty your bank account. And if you do your research, experiment, and find a way to solve guitar problems without great expense, there is absolutely no reason for you not to explore those avenues.
I agree! I buy a guitar for the whole package - everything should be good from the get go! The only things you should change are minor things that annoy you after a few months of playing it.
Unless you are going for a specific sound of course...
