So you have an inexpensive gift suggestion for a musician? Post it here and I will add it to the list.

I always have birthday presents to buy for musicians and never know what to get them...
So far I have:

GUITARISTS:
Guitar leads/cables
picks
camera type bag for tuners and so on
strings (ask what type and gauge first!)
tuner (chromatic)
sheet music
Guitar finish polish/cleaner etc.
Fret stick (I dunno what it is called, looks like brown lip-ice)
Humidifier for acoustics
Metronome (may be taken as a hint at sloppy playing though)
Floor/wall stand
Slide - brass or glass or ceramic (thanks Viccy)
Capo - Jim Dunlop are pretty good IMO (thanks Viccy)
Guitar strap (thanks Viccy)
Allen key set - for adjustments to the setup (thanks Alan for inventing them)

BASSISTS:
strings (ask what type and gauge first!)
camera type bag for tuners and so on
Guitar leads/cables
Metronome (may be taken as a hint at sloppy playing though)
Floor/wall stand
tuner (chromatic)

DRUMMERS:
Drum sticks (ask what style/shape)
Drum stick baggy
practice drum (for road trips/holiday practice etc)

Ear plugs (disposable type, some drummers go through quite a few)
New skins (again, find out what type and diameter)

GENERAL:
CD vouchers
Sheet music
Quality headphones (Sennheiser HD202's are a good start)

I don't know what it's called, but that metal slide thingy people put on their 4th finger when they play country-type music. Or a new strap, so that they can colour coordinate. Or a capo.

a squier tele , they fairly cheap .

but in all fairness , most birthdays and Xmas i normally get a shiney new strap from the kids or a music DVD and a handfull of picks . now if we could get customized picks in SA we would be smiling

What do you mean exactly? With a logo on or a customized type of material and shape?

There are a couple of books that could come in handy.

"The Guitar Handbook" by Ralph Denyer is useful and not just a coffee table book. Might not suit advanced players though.

For acoustic guitarists there is "The Acoustic Guitar Owner's Manual", which has lots of good information about care, setup, types of string etc.

There are also books by some bloked named Ratcliffe that, I believe, are handy for electric players.

For nylon string players (and perhaps steel string players if they do lots of finger style) there is the book "Pumping Nylon".

Those are just some suggestions, there are plenty more guitar books.

For a Capo consider a G7th. That may have some bragging value as well.

Or a partial capo. Shubb make two kinds. One that capos 5 strings and gives a sort of Drop-D tuning, and one that capos either 5,4,3 or 4,3,2 depending on which way round you fit it.

What do you mean exactly? With a logo on or a customized type of material and shape?

with a logo or something like that , a message a picture anything really . i know you can get them in the US but never heard of them here .
