Who are you insured with?

Hi Donovan,
I'm insured with Dial-Direct.
If they do good on my claim then I will give them major points.
So far they have been helpful and quick to respond and visit my house.

I just got a call from the insurance.
They took the guitars to Music Mate.
The report from Music Mate:
There are nothing wrong with the guitars.
We should give it 3 - 6 months.
The electric guitars does not look like they have been in water!
No you idiots, I removed most of the water and placed the cases in the sun >☹
For crying out loud, the accoustic was on its back in water >☹
This is going to become a nightmare

Are you saying they're (insurance) prepared to wait up to six months to see if anything needs to be repaired? That may not be such a bad thing, guy. Better than them denying you straight away?

Jee I would knock something out...
Music Mate is pretty useless IMO, I went to one a while back just to look for a new humidifer.. I specified that and the sales bloke pulled out a capo for me... I just said no thanks, a humidifier... and walked out. Never been back.
So I am not suprised.
i hope things get sorted out tho

I have to agree with you, Brent. Never had a good experience with them at all. I do think if the insurance company is prepared to wait to see if the guitars dry out (and they may be wrong, of course), at least this gives inflames a chance to ask them to get a second opinion.

This is what really Hacks Me off about insurance Companies!
When it comes to the crunch- they NEVER willing to pay!
Pathetic!

Knock something out? Dude I'm so mad I can scream! It is boiling inside of me.
I will take the guitars to another place, maybe Marshall in the city.
I can't believe their stupidity, I wan't to know who she talked to at Music Mate.
I will pay them a visit and have a little heart 2 heart with the person that had a look at my gear!
I can in some way understand the electric guitars, but the wet acoustic? Please give me a break here!
Remember the guy that made the video on the place company that did not pay his guitars!
How does: www.dialdirecthell.co.za or www.dontdialdirect.co.za sound?
Sorry guys/gals if I'm upset or being unreasonable.

Your insurance company can only go on what they are being told by the experts. Get them back ASAP and take them to someone with a good rep and ask him for an opinion and if needed (after all, they may actually be OK - both Gearhead and I mentioned this possibility earlier in the thread), a written report. Then go back to Dial Direct and suggest they get a third opinion from a luthier, not a music store sales person.

Alan, I aggree that they might be ok, but how can I trust someone that said all my guitars are ok, even the acoustic?
Something is just not lekker here.
I will take it to Marshall in Cape Town.
Alan who else can you recommend?
AlanRatcliffe
Speak to Foster v.d. Merwe 021 939-5259. If you want someone they really would not be able to argue with (very highly regarded internationally - some put him in the top 10 acoustic luthiers in the world), speak to Marc Maingard 072 6971333 or 021 780-1236

There's you error. You should, at the least, have taken pictures of the damage first. The guys at Music Mate can't rule on damage that they can't see. If you dried the guitars out, sprayed some kind of anti-rust goo into the control cavities etc then you inadvertently removed information that could have helped them with making a decision.
Even if you took photos first and those accompanied the guitars when they went for assessment MM would have had more evidence to work with.

I agree with Alan, MM are probably the closest to the Insurance Co., and they probably showed it to some ignorant salesperson........take it to Marc or Foster like Alan suggests....even if it costs you a few rand for a written assessment....I hate Insurance co's, but what can one do?
Good luck man.......

Just an update on this:
My acoustic guitar started swelling and sounds terrible.
The Epiphone Les Paul's pickups started cutting out. This was confirmed my Manfred.
The Jackson is ok (Go Jackson go!!!) .
I took the acoustic and Les Paul to Marshall Music in Cape Town yesterday.
I spent about an hour with Gareth, what a cool friendly guy!
He sent me a full report on the two guitars that I will submit to the insurance company tomorrow morning.
So If all goes well the acoustic will get replaced (ribs are pulling apart). Gareth made the recommendation that all the electrics on the Eppi should get replaced, but that in the long run the wood might still swell.
So hold thumb all, tomorrow it is me and the insurance people!

Holding thumbs mate, hope it gets sorted out like quite soon!!!

I don't think you'll have any trouble with them as they go on the reports. Hopefully you will have some spanking new axes for Halloweenstock!
Just be careful not to absorb too much liquid yourself before you come ?

Dude, that Saturday for Helloweenstock I will be as sober as a judge! I have a huge b-day party the evening and I need to play acoustic at the party!

I got a DVD of Gigantour a while back and on the extra content Dave Mustaine talks about breaking guitars. He had to smash a Jackson, it broke his heart, but said that those puppies are built strong. It took all of 4 full swings to break the guitar. Indeed, go Jackson go. After a nuclear war there will be cockroaches and Jacksons left.
