I went to a wedding yesterday, when I arrived home at 12:00 it sounded like a waterfall.
A water pipe burst in my house and a 5 cm dam is in my house. The carpets and everything else is wet.
The thing I’m worried about is my guitars. I only recently moved in, so they where still flat on the floor and 5c cm in water. The protective cases did not help, the water penetrated the cases. >☹
This sucks!

Eina! Sorry om te hoor ou maat. :'(

It may not all be over. Wood does not accept water very quickly - in fact it hardly takes in more water being submerged then it does in 99% humid air. The inverse also is the case - it does not let go very quickly.
Take the guitars out of the water (you may have done so already ? ), take the water out of the guitars (ditto), dry them off with toilet paper (if you still have) and then TAKE YOUR TIME. Leave the guitars in a relatively damp place and do not expose them to heat, sun, dry air or other things that dry them out quickly. Chances are they are alright.

hey dude.... i am plumber, i come across things liek this pretty often, u should find out from your insurance cause alot of my clients have claimed on all their items that have water damge as insurance covers burst pipes.
some flats are run by the body coorporate so just be stern with them cause they are always difficult...... i am sure they cover damages aswell......
good luck man

(EDIT: While I was typing, this whole post turned into a +1 to Gearhead's post. )
Eek! That's one of my nightmares. Shit man, real sorry for you...
Main thing is to get them out of the cases and to a relatively dry place - not completely dry though and keep them away from direct sunlight or high temperatures - they need to dry out slowly. I'd probably slack off the strings a few tones if they are really wet. If it wasn't too long and they weren't immersed completely, the electrics should be OK as the finishes are pretty water resistant, but water gets in through screw holes and unfinished fingerboards if they are submerged. Acoustics less so, but also might not be too bad if they didn't get water inside the soundhole.
Keep us posted...

Here's another thought - unscrew jack plates, pickguards, control cavity covers etcetera to make sure there's no film of water between guitar and plastic.

Thanks guys!
I did what Gearhead said 02:00 this morning when I got all the water out of my house.
Lucky for me I have insurance, but still these guitars are special to me. There are so many memories.
I should have placed them in a better place to start with. Thing was just so hectic with the move.
The guitars were in water for about 8 hours!
ARG, no to explain to the insurance why they need to replace my guitars >☹
Enjoy your long weekend!
+1 to Gearhead

Hell Lean, really sorry to hear of this (hope it's not a disaster as Gearhead and Alan suggested)....... I always have my guitars stand up straight, even in their cases. Geez, now I'm gonna go and get heavy duty plastic bags, and put each one in a bag. I'm sure it'll be ok, holding thumbs!!! Yeah, keep us posted.

Thanks Aubs, normally I keep my guitars on higher ground :'(

I am so sorry to hear about this.
One tip - remember that all the wooden furniture will have to be upturned. A friend's house was flooded and they neglected to do this - the wood on the underside of the feet rotted.
I hope everything is okay! Carpets are always a problem, I hate them

Thanks aja, yes I did turn my furniture ?
The lamenated flooring is coming undone as well ?
Shame, Carine (my better half) just started crying when we walked in.
All her personal stuff is also ruined, like her GHD hair stratner. That is her baby and can't live without it.
Had a stiff double brandy and coke zero at 03:00 this morning!
Just made a giant fire in my braai room, now I will braai my house dry ?
Crap, my home theater is also screwed so no music tonight >☹
At least I can grab my accoustic and play some watery tunes for me and the misses ?

I'm really sorry to hear about your misfortune. Hope everything will turn out ok. Only time will tell now.

:sorry: So sorry to hear of your tragic misfortune Lean...
IF you need any help with the electrics you know who to call. There are companies that can help with drying out your house. My advice is to lodge a claim with your insurance company as water damage is almost certainly covered, including getting rid of the water before more damage is caused.
Hope everything is quickly resolved.

Thanks again all!
Graeme, yea the insurance will cover the carpets etc.
Tomorrow I will hear if they cover my guitars.
If they don't GFSA will have one less member!
The house smell like crap! It's now been 23 hours!
This is not lekker.
I want to play guitar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :'(
Keira, tomorrow I'm hitting the pawn shops for a quick fix!
Hope to find a JEM like yours ?

I normally use a lemon cut in half, hollowed out and filled with salt to get rid of smells - place in fridge or car overnight. But I guess you would need a few lemon trees for a whole house.
How are your amps doing? (holding thumbs)
