OK so I'm more of a Linux-bitch than a Windows-bitch. Granted, I've been using XP for the past 2 years but, this last week, I switched back to an OS that works ?
Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) is really good. I'm using compiz (Google it -- very sexy) plus Mac4Lin (Google that too) to make it look very sexy and to help me visualise towards my goal of getting me a Mac but I'm at the point now where I'm not sure I want a Mac any more! If I get one, I may just load Ubuntu on it!
The thing is, this is an oldish laptop (Compaq NX7000) with just 768Mb of ram and XP was dying. I load Ubuntu and it's FLYYYYYING, even with fancy 3D compiz cube things and stuff!
So I'm back on GLUG (Gauteng Linux Users Group) and someone mentions Ubuntu Studio. What?! Why didn't anyone tell ME about this?
Cut a long story short, it looks cool and I'm probably going to buy a pretty basic, second-hand (read, very cheap) PC and do some recording on there. It doesn't have amp-modeling but I can use my current amp and pedals for that.
If someone's already been there, done that -- share your tips please! If not, watch this space. It will take me some time to get my butt into gear (I don't do this for a living, you know!) but it will happen. When it does, I'll post the results here for your crit ?
An important part of all of this will be finding a decent sound card that's suited to recording and that Linux has full support for. You see, the manufacturers don't always share the details of how their stuff works in order for the Linux community to create drivers, so you need to find stuff from manufacturers that "support" Linux (by sharing the source of their drivers).
