Nitromethane more often than not ? And they used alcohol based fuels in early F1, with additives such as Kerosine and others, some of which had IMMENSE liquid to gass transfer which made the turbo'd F1s absolutely brutish (Boost of 3.5 or more barre)
Correct, Nitro usually refers to nitromethane which is also known as Top Fuel - as used by Top Fuel Dragsters.
Nitrous will refer to N2O, Nitrous Oxide or on the streets "Naaawwwsss!" (Taken from NOS, the brand manufacturer Nitrous Oxide Systems' acronym and logo) ?
The turbo F1 one cars were an engineering feat - with the fuels and mixes used a closely guarded secret. Some say they'll admit to
not landing on the moon before they divulge that secret. Many things were added and are added (where allowed by the racing formula) to boost the octane and slow down the flame speed so that less timing can be used, higher compression ratios and more boost can be run as the higher octane and slower flame speed helps prevent pre-detonation (pinging, pinking, det, knocking).
Your lesson for the day.
