HARDCORE/METAL RECORDING

I was wondering with bands such as Killswitch Engage / As i lay dying etc. they are all using the good old faithfull EMG 81/85 combo LIVE but when it comes to their recording (the distortion tracks) do you think they actually record with EMG loaded guitars or passive or both? i am just curious as i LOVE their tones and if/when i record again i want a beter tone.
(i recorded a previous album with EMG's but sounded abit sterile,that and the post mixing etc. made my guits sound like bon jovi band ? not metal tone)

*im hoping DEAN has some input here...

I would assume they use their trusty EMG's on the album version too.

The amp/cab/mic is probably the most important factor here.

And finally it takes a good producer and a good set of ears to E.Q and play around with those
raw guitar tracks to produce a Huge/ Sweet Sound.

I remember reading As I Lay Dying used a les paul for their guitars instead of their fernandes sponsor. Not sure about the latest though ???

But bands often chop 'n change in studio. Opeth for one use Laney live but it hasn't been used on any of the last couple albums.

A good thing to do is try and find studio vids of your favorite bands (everything is on the internet!) check out what they're using. But most often ignore the amp being used in the shot ?.

I personally prefer the 85 over the 81 for bridge, and a 60 for neck.
81 tends to get too harsh and metallic sounding...and sorta turns your metal recordings into 1's and 0's.

Obviously that last part wasn't true...I was just being biased ?

That new Opeth Watershed album sounds good, probably the nicest hard rock/metal production I've heard so far, they've proven it can be done, just because it's metal it doesn't have to sound like a dog took a shit onto a microphone.

I think as i lay dying uses the 85 in the bridge...yeh i agree - i think it shud sound beter, 81 is pretty damn harsh.

Dean that JVM 410H you got me hooked! damn its nice (and flexible ? )
