Having said that, if you have a nice amp already (I'm presuming you're happy - you don't mention upgrading it) and you have the money to treat yourself then why not? Try a few and see if anything grabs you - that's the best test.
However, if you're really trying to decide between upgrading amp or upgrading the guitar, my money is usually on the amp - makes more of a difference to the sound quality. But ultimately, it's a decision only you can make.
