It's true, often the nuances of one hobby will affect another. You can justify dropping one in favour of another when you decide to make money off the selected one but sometimes you're just a hobbyist guitarist.

My trouble came in over the weekend, while fiddling on my car I manged to burn the index finger of my left hand on a dead short - silly, I know. I then proceeded to get my ring finger of my left hand caught in the radiator fan - I'm lucky to not have lost the finger but I did cut it... oi vey! There goes the practice...

I had a similar scenario with my sport. The injuries I was occurring in rugby started to affect my golf - so I quit the team sport and focused on the individual one.

I have two that dont go well together too, guitar and MTB...

Guitar still comes first tho. I have luckily enough never had a fall that broke a finger or arm..

I did however break a few bones in my right hand about 2 years back from errr... never mind.

had an operation, pins, and a plate put in. didn't stop me from playing guitar tho, or cycling off road. It did hurt alot, I was actually was hitting the pins out of the wound with all the impact, 6 weeks later... Pain is mos weakness leaving the body not? ? haha So stupid. wont do that again.. ever

And since you like to fiddle around with cars you'll have lots of sockets handy.

And I'm not really kidding. Lowell George had a great slide guitar tone, and he said it was because he used a Sears & Roebuck spark plug socket for a slide.

I don't doubt that'll work well... I've attempted slide with a bic lighter before.

Now onto the new topic, what country type slide pieces would you recommend I give a listen?
