I would like to know if it's possible to use pickups made for a Telecaster in a Stratocaster type guitar e.g. DiMarzio Twang King.
Can they be put in as they are or do I have to rout or something like that?
MikeM
Alan will have better answers for you, but i think the neck pup is a different size (slightly smaller) and the bridge has completely different mountings. I do know however that someone, i think dimarzio, makes a strat pup that sounds like a tele.

anything is possible, and i am sure it will sound cool in a start. i am experimenting with my tele and busy machining a new bridge from stainless steele to accomodate a PRS Dragon II for my bridge and gonna change the neck to a P-Rails.
MikeM
Yea p rails sound great in tele neck.
Why don't you look at getting a tele with a strat sup in the middle, what're they called... Umm Nashvilles!

Ja, well I've looked at the Seymour Duncan website and they sell a pickup called a Twang Banger which is supposed to sound like a tele, so I'll probably put one of those on my wishlist. Ideally I'd find a way to fit a DiMarzio Twang King to my strat-type guitar.

Normally it takes a little routing to fit. The pickguard is also different, as not only is it a 3-hole mount, but the angle is different too. The Strat-sized/shaped pickups like the Twang Banger are the simpler option, although not 100% pure Tele.
Also, if you have Alnico magnet Strat pickups you can quickly and easily mount a steel plate from Fralin or Callaham on the bottom of the pickup - that gets you a large part of the way there, kicking the output and mids and making the pickup more punchy.

Any ideas where we'd get baseplates around here? Might be able to ask my friend to make me one out of whatever material I need...

Locally you'd have to get one made up, but make a point of finding out what steel is used - they all have different magnetic properties. I picked mine up quite cheap from somewhere - saw them and threw a few in as part of an order. Might have been Guitar Nucleus. Otherwise I know Acme Guitarworks have them too. $10 or $12 usually IIRC.

? ?
Will probably get a brass one made up cause it's cheap and I believe my bridge is Ceramic so I don't need the output...

Thanks! You gotta love the Internet!
Funny thing - as I started reading I knew it was Bill Lawrence - he has a certain style of speaking science and speaking it AT you.

Np, glad to help!
The man is a genius. Seen his new online shop? I'm GOING to test some of his stuff out. Want to buy 2x tele bridges but just waiting on Bill and Becky.
