Does anyone know anything about the quality of the early Squier Strats that came out? I saw an '89 model and I've heard that their quality was a lot better than the ones sold today.

Not generally well regarded. Quality dropped with the switch to Korea - some models were even plywood. One of those that you judge on it's own merits and still buy cheap.
