Get a serial number and date it. If it's an early '80s Jap Squier ("Made in Japan", rather than "Crafted in Japan") it is well worth it (although, once again, local prices don't always reflect it). They were better than the US Fenders at the time and often used US pickups. The JV series (Japan Vintage - vintage reissues) in particular are beginning to get quite valuable.

The factory for these eary Squiers was Fuji Gen - one of the legendary Matsumotu-based guitar factories. They made Orville by Gibson, Greco, Yamaha, Roland and many Japanese Ibanez guitars.

Wow thats a first. But what does that mean. Is it a Squier or a Fender?

The first Squier guitars had a Fender logo in large script on the headstock with a smaller "Squier Series" logo but this soon changed to a large Squier logo with a smaller "by Fender" logo

I guess it will always be a hot debate that boils down to a logo.

I love my Jap Squier. It was made in 1990 and outclasees most MIM, or USA strats that I have played. (though i haven't played too many)

I know that there were also a few Squiers made in the USA for about a year(1989 - 1990), Their seriel numbers were either Exxxxxx for the 80's or Nxxxxxx for the 90's, but I saw one the other day with just a 4 digit serial number. Anyone know anything about these?

Ok paid the price and bought it as it sounded so good and is in great condition except for the traditional small "ashtray" burn on the headstock near the nut and it looks like someone maybe tried to screw a string lock gadget behind the nut on the headstock - some small screw holes but could easily be fixed. It also looks like the "made in ..." has been scratched out so it may well indicate Japan.

The pickups etc are all original with no signs of "new" soldering anywhere

The serial number is gold and the headstock says Squire Stratocastor by Fender and the serial number is E1006700!!

IIRC They were Japanese Fenders. The confusion creeps in in that the E and N prefixes were supposed to be reserved for US Fenders, but were also somehow used for some Japanese models.

The headstock says Squier Stratocaster by Fender made in the USA and the number on the headstock is 09xx(cant remember the exact no). I can't find any record of these...

Your own pics:
1. Open an account on Photobucket.
2. Upload your pics there.
3. Copy the IMG Code associated with your pic...usually does this automatically when you select the IMG window below the pic.
4. Paste the link in you post.

Pics on websites
1. Click the image icon in your posing page.
2. Go to the image you want to include in your post, right click over the image and select "copy image location"
3. Return to you post and insert the link between (img xxxxxxx /img) (There will be square brackets around the two "IMG's")
