It is indeed late, and interesting how this thread was revived.
I'm 41, live near Cape Town, but far enough away that I can sleep with my back door open. Bass too, but I'm your typical "guitarist playing bass" type. Used to play drums too, but haven't for a while. Gear: some guitars, a bass, some keyboards, NO amps, some computers. Influences: I treat other players as inspiration but the guitar itself is my influence.

Here goes...I'm Riaan, 43 years old...good heavens I hope not the oldest guy on this forum... ??? Also near Cape Town. Long time owner of guitars but my playing level does not reflect that. Still at beginner to at most, intermediate level. Lazy as hell, can't be bothered to learn to read music so I play mostly by ear. Own a Godin Solidac, Ibanex RX, Cort acoustic, Yamaha acoustic, Yamaha nylon string and a Regal resophonic. Roland Blues cube amp. Zoom 505II pedal, now gathering dust since I got the Godin - amazing what difference decent pickups make! Now that middle age is upon me, I'm trying to revive my youth by getting into guitars and improving my playing again. Next will be a Harley I guess... ;D

I'm Rene Avenant, 49 years old, from the southern suburbs of Cape Town. Started messing with guitars when I was 10. My early Influences were Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter, Lightnin' Hopkins, B.B King, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Richie Blackmore, David Gilmour, Frank Zappa, Brian May.
Later I got into the fusion stuff, Al DiMealo, Jeff Beck, Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clark, John McLaughlin. I went Trad Jazz, Brazilian and Classical in the 80's with Julian Bream, John Williams, Wes Montgomery, Carlos Jobim.
I gave up guitar for the whole of the 90's and took up piano and Midi Scoring and composed music for Stage (Theatre and Dance.) Initially I had a lot of success and became a little bit famous. (you can google me) I stared becoming incredibly frustrated trying to break into the film industy (Do the Trevor Rabin and other John Williams thing) so I went back to my roots, dusted off my strat and came back to life. I play out when I can and Im busy composing some new works using prominent guitar and my untrained vocals.
My tools are; 1988 Japanese Fender Strat, Fender Jazz Bass Special (Fretless), Manual Rodriguez Classical, Yamaha Steel String Acoustic, and a Stag Fretted Bass. My Effects are a Boss GT-6 for stage and Guitar Rig for recording. I dont use guitar amps, I go through either a 100w powered speaker or my Yamaha Stagepass 500 PA.
For recording and arranging I use Cakewalk Sonar 6 or Reaper. My Piano/Keyboard is a Roland RD-600. For orchestration I have recently weened myself off the Roland SC55 and use Softsyths; Edirol TTS, Super Quartet and Orchestra.
I use Erni Ball Super Slinky Strings and Dunlop Jazz III plectrums

I enjoy all kinds of music except R&B. My playing style would sway more towards Rock/Punk/Metal but thats cause most of the material I study is either Rock/Punk/Metal. I've been playing guitar and studying music theory for 7 months now. I've never been taught either of them by a teacher (which im kinda regretting now) ☹ but I get alot of help from this forum. When I got here I knew I liked guitar and music but i only had a vague understanding of this complex instrument and all its facets. At least now I can change the strings and I know what an interval is.
