I suck so much at soldering... been trying for like a month now and still can hardly get it right... Are there any books or videos that can help?

What's the "sponge thingy" for?

I was soldering yesterday, helping my friend to fix the mini-jack connector. From tools I used the soldering iron, soldering tin, rosin, plyers, knife, lamp, newspaper, insulation tape. What is the "sponge thingy"? I hope it is heplful.
You are right, the smell of the smoke adds a lot to the soldering experience. 8)

You're supposed to clean the tip on the sponge or something. Not so sure how it helps though.

The flux inside the solder wire tends to burn brownish.. black on the tip, so you wipe the tip every now and again to get a clean soldered connection.....

Main Rule of soldering:

Apply Heat
Apply Solder
Remove Heat
Remove Solder.

And do not blow on the solder joint to try and make it cool down quicker.....causes dry joints....
