Girl Guitarists?

So I was thinking, why does it seem like guitar playing is a mainly male affair? It's not like girls can't do it, yet you hardly ever see/hear of a girl guit...

I reckon, nearly without exception, all great male guitarists are feminine by general standards. You know, softies.

And I reckon that most ladies are SO feminine, that they don't feel a need to prove themselves on guitar.

Does that make sense?

My niece plays bass in their church band in PE. She's only been playing for a year now, but she's loving it.

According to my buddy, his wife is pretty good on electric, although she doesn't play as much as she used to.

I think woman focus more on playing guitar than chatting about it. I'm gonna get banned for that comment.

The Stats on this forum say that there are 105 members and the male to female ratio is 23:1, by my reckoning that means that we have 1 female guitarist (Reef) and 3 and a half guys that don't know what sex they are? ;D

BTW, my 14 year old daughter is an aspiring blues rock guitarist. She is already up to speed with some meat and potatoes solos such as SRV's Cold Shot, Claptons Sunshine of your love, Gilmour's Comfortably Numb.

I tried to inspire her to join this forum but she sais she's a do'er and guitar chat sites are for old dreamers, ouch! >☹

No, it's a fact that there are less girl/female guitarists than male.

They don't partake in forums as often, and when they do they are more likely to lurk, because we are a predominantly male group, and predominantly male groups tend to behave badly with a girl in the house.

I think we are a quite civil bunch. As for being old, I guess some of us are at the top of the hill looking down ☹

But then, what is old for a guitar player. The majority of really good players are in their 30's or older.

there is nothing better than a woman who can play an instrument and play it well. i am not into these superficial pop stars, who are there just for the image. i have posted a video of a an aussie girl named Orianthi, she has accompanied Santana and Vai.

She is awesome and only 18 years old

That aussie is pretty sweet but it sounds like the guy who's filming is perving over her.

I'm not sure about the male vs female guitarist debate at all. It's definitely a male dominated domain.
Perhaps there's just less incentive for women and girls to pick up guitars and become guitar heroes. All they get for their trouble is sore fingers and bad attitude. Whereas men get to be superstars surrounded by bevies of nubiles.
I think there's a glass ceiling on women entering the domain of Slash and the likes because people expect that if you're not making bubblegummy music then you must obviously have a serious message to deliver if you dare to play a guitar. Women with guitars who 'make it' commercially well ... Ani Difranco, Tracy Chapman, Alanis Morisette, Joni Mitchell, Dixie Chicks etc
The music is either all about the angst, all about the social/political statements ..
So maybe it's more acceptable to play a man's instrument when you're making girlie music. Less threatening somehow.

And that's not to say that it's all men's fault that the male:female guitarist achievement ratio is out of sync. Because girls don't have to do anything to get boys interested in them except errr ... develop naturally at puberty ?
If some poor boy wants the attention of a girl though he'd have to be cool and therefore play his guitar until his fingers bleed in a bid to become John Mayer. Or if it's a bad girl he wants then he has to become Kirk Hammet or something.

Basically what I'm saying is that boys are better guitarists because they're an inferior species ? *ducking behind the couch*

Hahahaha! Dude your 14year old knows how to cut to the core. Ouch! But she sound driven.

Anyways...

I would love to see more female guitarists. Local and in the international spot light.
There needs to be female versions of Vaughan and Satriani to inspire girls to pick it up and start playing.

Saw Candye Kane (blues singer from the states) a while back. Her guitarist, Laura Chavez, was damn good!!!
