Transcribing question

Hi all
I have managed to find the link to the vid of human nature by John Mayor @ the MJ tribute

Great song so I decided i would have a crack at transcribing it
But man was I stuck
How does one transcribe single notes, is it something that comes with time and experience. I am able to transcribe simple stummy songs like most of MTV's unplugged ie Nirvana staind. But this human nature thing was a mission. Eventually dowloaded tabs of some site. Not complete but a good bases for me to work from.
Do I find the chords first and then determine the key and then try and use my ear to get somewhere close

Determine the key that he is playing in first, figure out the chords (or download them from the net) Then work out the lead part, most of it just the melody of the song so its not too difficult

what would be the easiest way to figure out what key he is playing ??

It looks like he's playing out of G. I might be mistaken but I think the structure will be something like: 4 5 3m 6m.

Another quick question somewhat related
How do you transcribe when there is like heavy distortion and effects and that kind of stuff

I normally find it more difficult to figure out chords and stuff when there are too many effects on the guitar. When I struggle too much figuring out the guitar, I pick up the bass and work it from there
