Weird Coincidences

It is quite uncanny how one can start seeing related coincidences in random events. First read an explanation for it in this Article - http://www.damninteresting.com/the-baader-meinhof-phenomenon. - (Link doesn't seem to be active, but if you google it it makes for an interesting read.)

and what appeals to me is when i find like minded people who's lives just seem to be in parallel without even meeting....
then they do ...and you discover they been working on similar projects ideas and you have an instant bond....

well me for one am quite happy that there so many coinsidences and serendipty too ... makes me think there is some kinda pattern and this universe is not just random....

Well, Sting wrote a Police album about exactly this phenomenon - Synchronicity (Carl Jung's theory). I've also encountered a number of examples of it in real-time.

I knew some one would bring that up. I understand how the mind works as a filter and once you let something be important to you, you notice it more when you previously would have filtered it out. THIS IS DIFFERENT. I also understand how people can project their own desire for synchronicity onto events, looking for connections in random things.

I came accross something that does have the potential to be very important to me, and I'll explain later if anyone wants to know. The situation was this. I find a concept of importane to me(to many people) and I think to myself "hm, I should look this up when I have more time" and then the next day the information I'm looking for throws itself into my lap when I randomly choose an arbitrary name from a long list of people that talk about a wide range of topice from script writing to the string theory.

I'm not saying I'm going to start a cult now or that this is anything more than chance. In fact it is only chance. That's why it's so weird.

The reason this is important to me is because I believe everyone should have an opportunity to learn. I also believe that there are barriers put up between various feilds that could potentialy be bennificial to each other. this will help people customise information from reliable sources to come to new conclusions. I'll leave it at that.

You're into string theory? Great! I've always been more into quantum mechanics and a little bit of chaos. I desperately need to catch up on what's happening in string theory these days. How many dimensions are they working in now? I think it was 12 last I looked.

BTW - IMO, scientifically the only thing amazing about coincidence is that it doesn't happen more often. Probably it does and we are just not paying enough attention. ?

Sorry to disappoint, but my fanatical following of Star Trek is lacking, and as far as the string theory goes, last time I looked they were still at 12.

Now I'll go into a crazy rant about how cool it would be if people could prove that music bends time and space and how cool it would be if the root of a key is somehow magnetised by friction in the melody and music is just a juggeling of these magnetic forces repelling and attracting each other.

This is a true story: years ago...actually many years ago... my girlfriend at the time was studying for a science exam and asked me to help her with a few things she didn't understand. During the explanation of a specific problem I asked her what the common factor in all the equations we were busy with was. The answer (which she didn't immediately recognised) was "gravity". We were sitting in her dad's study, who was a very bright pharmacist with a wide scientific interest, surrounded by all his books which covered the walls.

I explained the concept in different ways a couple of times, hoping that she would recognise that the common factor was "gravity". No success...

Next thing, a loud crash on the bookshelf at the far end of the room, away from us. A thick and heavy book that had been standing on it's side fell for some unknown reason just flat on the shelf. The title was clearly readible: "Gravity by Isaac Newton"...

That was eerie, to say the least. My girl thought it was terribly funny... ?

The Leonard Cohen song started popping up everywhere. After posting about it after my cousin played it for me(to show off his new headphones) I spoke to my mom the next day and my mom said she was learning a Leonard Cohen song for her friend, guess which one. Then on Monday I went to the open mic night at the Barleycorn, guess what, someone does a cover of the Leonard Cohen song, Hallelujah.

Well that's a pretty popular song right about now. Even Leonard Cohen recently had a hit with it in the UK.

This is an interesting post because it suggests that two people may independently have similar ideas round about the same time. This then could lead to suspicions of plagiarism: "Look at that! That's too good to be true. Somebody must have been looking over my shoulder. Let me call my lawyer."

Not that I'm suggesting that you're the litigious type, but say guys somewhere just happen to come up with very similar chord progressions and lay very similar melodies over the top...

Of course it also allows for abuse if the law recognises and allows for such co-incidences. "Who me? I grant the songs are very similar, but I have never heard Mr Dubery's composition. It's just co-incidence. There are only so many possible combinations of notes and chords." (said with fingers crossed under the witness stand)

That would explain it. As for the painting, I don't see it as being plagerism, because I know that she hadn't seen my painting or vice versa. I don't know her, but it is not such a stretch of the imagination to have come across a painting similar to mine in style and subject matter. There are certian media that, used by similar people, would open up avenues of self expression that would produce similar paintings.

As for Allan Holdsworth, WOW, that's realy cool, I'll look him up.
