New bloke here !

Stoner-Riff

Hi there . . . never knew there is an SA Guitar Forum.

I am a long time member on various international foums, but no one ever told me about this here local one !

Well, not much to say, except "Hi", and needless to say, i am still checking everything out.

Got me self some guitars, pedals and a few amps.
Most of my gear come from the US, as i am NOT willing to pay SA daylight robbery prices, even after the so called "cash discounts".
I work in the US for up to 7-8 months at a time, so i have a 'slightly' bigger option when it comes to ermmmmm, EVERYTHING !

Cheers

Depending on how you play this, you've either just made a forum full of friends or alienated yourself badly. ?

I was recently on holiday ("vacation" for our American readers) in the UK, and based on what I saw in shops there I'd dispute that we pay "daylight robbery prices" in SA. Now it may be true that you pay more for American brands in both SA and the UK than you do in USA, but that's to be expected as freight and duties have to be factored in. But I can also tell you that you will pay more for fine British or EU made instruments (such as Fylde and Lowden) in the USA than you will in the UK.

I recently bought a Smoothtalker guitar made by Mervyn Davis in Broederstroom. You'll pay the best part of $3000 for one of those in the USA, buying it locally you will get it a distinctly better price. Does that mean that US dealers are engaging in "daylight robbery"? Of course it doesn't.

Welcome aboard man, post some gear pics! Where are you based?

Good post Bob. That pretty much sums the situation up accurately.

The one advantage you do get buying from the US is that the retailers often have huge discounts on certain items - competition is stiff and it shows. We get the same kind of thing on occasion, when the canny buyer can pick up decent deals - "Birthday sales" and the like, but they are fewer and further between. Even if you do find things cheaper in the US, much electrical/electronic gear is 110V, costs a fortune to ship and you pay VAT on this end - on the shipping costs too.

Of course, it helps when you are flying to and from there anyway and you can avoid the shipping charges, as in Stoner's case. ?

This is very true. A lot of people compare ebay US prices for locally sold instruments and will offer considerably less than what the market in SA can/will pay. Shipping is a big factor and so is availability. The less demand for the item in SA the higher the higher the price would be. Basic marketing dictates that. Guitars like Taylor and martin could be considered expensive but the market is tiny in SA
