Wizard I work with actuaries and read this in their latest (UK based) magazine: A mathematics graduate from Heriot-Watt University has abandoned a promising career as an actuary to follow his dream of opening his own music shop. Jonathan Clark, 22, is now on course to turn over half a million pounds in his first year since launching Imported Instruments at Ocean Terminal in Edinburgh. Jonathan said "I felt it was going to be more captivating for me to do this rather than become an actuary. I'm not sure in the current climate whether being an actuary would be a good thing or not. I think I have made the right decision"
DonovanB thats heavy. I am on the verge of resigning to start my own business. Its a big risk cos I am in a cushy job but I feel I need to take it
Wizard Here's another from our internal company magazine: Jann Krynauw, an investment specialist in the actuarial asset consulting unit and his band TONIK landed the South African Music Award (SAMA) for the Best Instrumental Album of 2008
[deleted] my brother's an actuary is is pestering me to write music for us to play together. I think it sounds like a plan. He plays the clarinet. I think he secretly wants to win a SAMA too.
Wizard Many actuaries also play music. While working in product development, Jan Krynauw and I started a music experiment. Every Friday we'd bring in a collection of musical instruments and start playing in the open-plan office at 6pm. The idea was to attract any laymen to just join in and try stuff out. We called it "The Development Project". Worked magically until some idiot who was trying to meet a deadline complained about the disturbance & the project was abandoned.
DonovanB Wizard wrote Worked magically until some idiot who was trying to meet a deadline complained about the disturbance & the project was abandoned. ja, work gets in the way of everything
Carmen Sometimes you've just got to take a risk. If you aren't happy with what you're doing, do something you like doing, although, be sure to do your homework first...otherwise you're going to get some nasty surprises...
