Powering multiple pedals

I'm slowly but surely making the switch to individual stomp boxes and weening myself off the Zoom 505II (no thanks to Riaan! ?) but now I sit with the power supply question.

Unfortunately, the stores that I've stopped at have had your typical weekend warrior teen types working the counter and they're a little clueless at best.

I'm running three BOSS stomps (9v, neg tip), but need a way to power all off them from a single wall wart or the likes. The chain cables I've found are full male so no place to hook it up to a male outlet from the PS.

What options do I have here and what voltage / amperage will I need to feed into them to keep it balanced?

although from what I've experienced the Boss Delay pedals like their own supply.

You get the chains with a female socket on one end - that's the easiest and cheapest. If they don't have stock (wouldn't surprise me, seeing as some of them even run out of strings on occasion these days >☹), tell them to get.

Chains work, but if you pick up problems with earth loops, you might have to get a dedicated multiple power supply.

I did see an Ibanez chain but it was hellish expensive in comparison to a power supply with five plugs. I didn't go for the power supply as I wasn't sure if the ranges (V/A) would be ok.

Another option you can look at is getting a Warwick or {insert brand} pedalboard/gigboard/pedal case. I use mine with multiple Boss pedals and no problems. The pedal board comes with 5 x 9v DC, 1 x 12v DC outlets (with adaptors) and 2 integrated effects loops... etc.. Very useful indeed. Which in your case means you can have your Zoom and your other stompboxes on the board and set it up so you can have different effect loops using your stompboxes or you Zoom...

Mine looks like this one, set me back R1000 a while back. Worth every cent IMO. You get some nice aluminium ones aswell.

Hmmm... nice idea.

Looking at the BCB30 now. Only takes 3 Boss pedals so if (when) I do expand I'll have to decide which to keep or which hang over the side...

BCB60 is pricey though....

Found a really nice regulated 3000ma power supply at Mantech in JHB. That's more than enough power for my 12 pedal setup and it costs around R300.

It's actually not a bad idea to overdimension the power supply. Regardless of the rating, the more current you draw the more ripple comes out. More spare power is likely to also mean less ripple per mA drawn.

One thing though. This power supply is wired Center Positive, so you have to cut the cable and swop the positive and negative wires around so the head supplies center negative.

Has tappings for both 9V and 12v pedals.

Yeah meanwell do work! I am currently using a 9V 3A supply to power all my pedals and it works perfectly. The only problem I had was that the supply was a tip positive where my boss effects were tip negative. So I simply cut the jack off and switched the polarity around. I will also point out that this supply only cost me R160. A fraction of what guitar supplies cost!!!
