I've read that using a volume pedal in your FX loop can work as a cheap alternative to an attentuater. What you do is plug into the FX and turn the volume down so you can turn your amp's volume up, driving your tubes harder.
Sounds as it can work. Anyone can reinforce it?

That works like a master volume and you end up only driving the preamp valves harder. Would work OK for a more metal distortion, which tends to be more preamp than power amp drive. The attraction of an attenuator is that it lets you run the power valves harder for the more bluesy/vintage rock "cranked amp" sound.

Wait for Graeme's attenuator! It will be very affordable and works amazing!
