Hey guys.
Good to be part of this forum.
I need some advice. I'm looking to move up in the world and get myself a tube amp. The sound I want to achieve is a blues/blues rock sound. I suppose similar to John Mayer/Dan Patlansky.
What would be the best amps to achieve this, keeping in mind I have about R5k to spend. This amp will be used in my room and to jam with friends etc.
Thanks a lot.

Take a look at the peavey classic 30, altough it might be a little bit more than than 5k, maby around 6-7k new.
You may be able to pick up one 2nd hand.

First of all welcome to the forum....Plenty Blues / rock addicts here....... 8) 8)
Where shall I start......Here are a few....
Laney LC15 Combo
Laney VC15 Combo
Vox AC4TV Combo
Blackstar HT-5 10" Combo
Laney Lionheart 5W Combo
If you could spend more.....Fender Hot Rod Blues Junior
EDIT: Have a look and audition different amplifiers with your guitar and any EFX you have and see which one suits your tone / playing style etc....

I agree with manny, have a look at the peavey.
If you have a bit more $ to spend go for the Fender Hot Rod!

Yup, classic 30 is the way to go.

Classic 30 is a great amp, but I'm not sure it's the right choice for someone looking for the Fender amp tones of Mayer and Patlansky. More a Vox/Marshall cross tonally.
Given the budget, I'd look at the Fender Super Champ XD - 15W into a 10". Analog modelling front end, but a valve power amp. Highly recommended. Also the Fender Pro Junior is worth a look - all valve 15W into a 10".

Thanks guys. I was looking at the Peavey classic 30, seems like a good amp, its just I was told from a guy I know that they made with Chinese parts and not so great. But I'll have a look at the Fenders Alan mentioned. My friends got a Fender Hotrod Deluxe and that things is sweet......just pricey.

The older Classic 30 was great (although they do eat power valves fairly quickly) - I used one for a couple of years (a rare 3X10" version). Good, solid, working amps, lots of info on modding them floating around the Net too. Pretty compact, but bloody loud for a 30W amp, so I wouldn't like using one at home (in fact the main reason I sold mine).
I have heard that they revised the Classic 30 a couple of years ago and they got a bit unreliable after that. No direct experience with that though. The chassis is small though, so very few upgrade speakers will fit - and many that do fit cause problems with the magnet being too close to the valves.

BTW we had a good listen to the Laney VC15 a while back at Music Connection using a US Standard Srat.
Very nice clean tone and the distortion channel really crunches. Very Full and rich....
Not quite as three dimensional as a Hot Rod Deluxe but very good considering it's 1/4 the price.

now you got me reminiscing... I recently sold my Fender Bassman 50.
A lot is said about the silverface being inferior but I have yet to play a better amp than that. look around if you want one, those things are oooooooooooooooooorrrsome!!!!
AlanRatcliffe
They are not bad amps, designed to be more stable than the older blackfaces at a bit of a cost to tone. I've played some great silverfaces though. It also depends on year and model, some are identical (or close) to the blackface amps, some have since been fully or partially "blackfaced". In many cases, being newer amps, they are in better condition than old blackfaces.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Hi welcome to the forum ?
John Mayer plays a Two Rock which is a 100w 6L6 amplifier, you looking at R60k-90k for the head alone
Dan Patlansky uses a Dr Z EZG50 which is a 50w 6L6 amplifier there you looking at R40k for the head.
They both use the BIG American clean sounds.
You wouldn't go wrong with the amps mentioned before these, there are some great amps there.
Vox is probably the most versatile IMO and i would start there...
If I took Dans '62 Strat and played though his Dr Z amp, I can promise you I WONT sound like Dan Patlansky, I'm still going to sound like Brent. :-[ It's a common myth.
You have to just go out there, take your guitar, play all the amps you can lay your hands on. Crank them, turn back the volume and then turn up the volume again, listen and play, and then take what sounds good to your ears, and suits the pocket!!! ?
I hope that helps a little... ?

+1. Stevie Ray Vaughn was using Marshalls at times shortly before his death and he still sounded like SRV. I've seen Brian May up close (5m away) and when he played a Telecaster, his tone was a bit brighter, but otherwise unmistakeably Brian May.

Haha I agree with you and understand what you saying, its just I enjoy the tone they achieve, and looking for a similar sound. But point taken ?

Most definitly. John Mayer is my favorite artist, been that way since 2002, and probably will be for ever.
The reason I bought an electric in the first place is because of Dan Patlansky... I played acoustic for 8 years before I picked up an electric..
So I know very well what you saying. . . ?
I just believe tone is made of the following : and I live by it... and I am all about the TONE!!!
80% of the "tone" comes from a combination of your heart, your soul, and your hands...
20% comes from your equipment...
