There's been a
lot of inflation and currency devaluation since then. My Les Paul cost me R3,000 in '95. Typical South African second-hand prices are now R15 - 18K - and that's not even as far back. Anything with "Fender" on it is good for R4,000 now days. Mexican may not be as good as USA, but they're still good, pro-quality (with maybe a few upgrades over time) guitars.
Having a think, wasn't R800 for your Strat about $1600 in the eighties? ? Not that cheap. You'd expect to pay about R12K to R15K for a second-hand USA strat today, no?
