MikeM Hey guys So i recently picked up a cheap strat that i've been gassing for, sounds good, however there's some real nasty fretwear from around the tenth fret and upwards and some slight wear down till i think third fret. Now it's quite a cheap guitar so i don't want to spend a ton getting it repaired, does anyone know of a reasonable tech somewhere between Sasol and Pta that could do it for me? And any ideas on How much it'll cost? Cheers Mike
AlanRatcliffe There are too many variables to say how much it will cost. The tech will have to look at it to get an idea of exactly how much work is needed. Often a player will expect a partial or full refret, but the tech will still be able to get away with a fret dress (fret wear often looks far worse than it is. Especially if you are willing to play on lower frets, it's often possible to get away with a dress, even if the wear is quite bad. Speak to music stores in your area to find a local guys who can do the work, phone them and ask for a rough quote on a full fret dress on a Strat, they'll often be able to give you a rough idea, but will probably refuse to commit until they see the guitar.
AlanRatcliffe Funny seeing it quoted like that. I'd never quote for fretwork without including the price of a setup in the price - it's an integral part of the job. You have to adjust the truss a couple of times to work on the frets and you can't touch up and test the dress unless you adjust the nut and bridge height to compensate for the frets. So it's not something you can say "give it a dress, but leave the setup". Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with the price - it's just weird (for me at least) to see the two listed separately. Does the price include strings? I go through two new sets while dressing frets - a set to do all the adjustments with, which I would find was at least partially knackered by the time I'd finished, and so another new set when all the work is done. Maybe that's just me though, I'm pretty fussy about strings... ?
MikeM Oh sorry, I worded it incorrectly. He said it's R480 for strings and a setup and then R380 for a fret dress. I see what you mean though. Sheesh, it seems silly to spend that on a squier ? Lol
Gearhead MikeM wrote Sheesh, it seems silly to spend that on a squier I reckon it won't be all Squier for long now... and for a FrankenSquier a neck-with-fret-dress would be good to have. Warm?
MikeM Hahah very true man ? I can't wait for my pups. Will be rocking then. And when I get my body done, it'll be a champ in disguise!!! ? Also want to put graphtec stuff on, but Stewmac comes first I think.
