☹ I would die I think... I have had an instrument stolen and we where told straight by the police that the chance of tracing them and getting it back is just about zero. A lot of them leave the country i'm sure. Ay :'(
I think it's hard for the police to track down a stolen guitar. I'm not sure they leave the country, they probably end up in the hands of people who don't ask too many questions about where a guitar comes from. Or in pawn shops. Thieves like to unload stolen goods pretty quickly.
What can help the police is if a message like this one gets circulated and somebody somehow comes in contact with the guitar and alerts the police.
I hope that Dan filed a case with the SAP.
Years ago I had a Blazer. I then sold this on and it was stolen from the guy who bought it. I was contacted by the repairman at Toms (the excellent Dennis). They had the serial numbers already, but wanted to know from me if there were any other distinguishing features. As it turned out I'd rerouted one wire inside the guitar - so with that information they had a better chance of identifying the guitar if it came into their shop (or any other shop that sent guitars to Dennis for repair).
All shops were alerted. If anybody came in with a metallic blue Blazer they were looking to sell or trade the shop would say "we want to have a look at it first" and then call Dennis who would tell them what to look for. The varmint would probably run like hell, but at least they'd recover the guitar.
It doesn't always work, but every now and then it does.
