Recording electric guitar + vocals

Hi All, I apologise up front if my question is discussed somewhere already but what I would like to know is what I need for home recording if my current gear is considered. I have a normal (cheapie) electric guitar and a Laney LV200 amp. I also have a PC (AMD CPU).
I'm VERY new to sound equipment so I don't always know what to even ask for. What would I need in regards to Mic's, software, etc.
I just want to start experimenting but also don't want something I'll replace in a year.

Theres quite a few threads in the 'Recording' section about what you can get.. It always however comes down to budget, and what you're aiming for.

I've been reading through quite alot since I first posted. I guess one of those portable USB things might do the trick but I'm curious as to how to record your amp and vocals at the same time without interference or any feedback. And if you record them seperatly it might be weird as to get the sync right etc.

If you're going to record vocals and electric at the same time, a good idea is to have the amp in another room, and then monitor via headphones. I go the 'record seperate' route sometimes, and there you have to go play with the DAW's 'latency' settings.

I sometimes have the amp in the same room where I'm doing a vocal take, but I end up re-recording the vocal if it's for something I want to release. However for scratch tracks, you can record all at the same time.. Just use headphones to listen back to from the Soundcard. Otherwise you can get feedback!
