Hey hey... I was looking through Alans links for a local electronic supplier. I have used Terry Distributors but they dont have everything I am looking for.

I know its probably been discussed before ad nauseum, but which cable is best for guitar leads (if I make my own) and which connections are best?

I was also thinking of possibly making balanced outputs to try reduce hum but then I would have to modify the GT8.

advice please guru's?

For me......

Cable...Klotz Instrument cable available from Wild & Marr
Connectors....Neutrik straight and right angle jacks also available from Wild & Marr

You can go unbalanced out of the GT-8 into a DI Box. The DI box will convert from unbalanced line level to balanced mic level which is more suitable for a mixer input.

If you want to go Stereo then Radial Engineering makes a stereo DI box.....a little expensive but worth every penny.

I've always used Mogami or Canare cable, but not always able to find a local source. Also heard good things about the Klotz from reliable sources.

Plugs I use the straight Neutrik (NP2C IIRC). I'm using some that are 20 years old and still going.

I don't like the idea of using a DI box for guitar unless you need a +50m cable run - changes the tone (and I'm the guy that used to have one built into his guitar!). A good cable is fine for the relatively short runs we use.

If you want to up the noise rejection of your cables, use a good two core mic cable and only connect the screen to the ground on the amp side. Makes your cables directional though, so you have to mark or use different colour plugs so you can figure out which end is which in the rush of setup.

If you need a 50m or more cable run I'd look at the Radial DIs that are specifically designed for that application. They make sure you get the same frequency and dynamic response as a normal cable.

Just to clarify.........I was only looking at the DI route from the perspective of the O/P of the GT 8. I presumed that going direct also means amp modeling off the GT 8.....etc...etc....

I would not endorse the DI'ing of an electric guitar directly......tone suicide....
