Well, i am tying the knot on the 29th of August and i am wondering what to expect as far as the guitar playing part of my life is concerned. When do you guys...

It does make shopping for Birthdays, Christmas, GAS-day etc very easy. One shop, Music Connection, something for everyone... ? ?
HeHeHe.....No points for guessing where I bought my sons birthday present this year......

What makes it even worse is that I work less than a block away from Music Connection.......HELP...... ?

Congrats Bud (I think ???) When I got married and had children guitars just didn't feature.
Ten years later when I got divorced I spent munny on electric guitars and amplifiers.
Wives don't like it when you go playing to the young girls in the nightclubs for some reason. :-[

I currently play for a garage band with no intention of becoming a travelling band. :?

@ Inflames - You should go to Zanzibar, it's awesome, we had our honeymoon there. It's something she'll treasure forever...

Congratulations! Married for 10 years now, and everyone has given good advice.

Stay on the forum, there are lots of experienced guys here who can advise on guitar related marital discourse...GAS, loud playing late at night, cables and pedals in the living room, dodgy muso friends, you name it! The older blokes here will be able to advise, no worries! ?

But seriously, being on the prowl was nice and exciting, but getting married and settling down is better. And once you have kids, it's even better still. Much more so if they enthusiastically strum your guitars and sing along even though they're yet unable properly hold a guitar, let alone finger notes.

Five years ago, I probably would've smacked any kid who just came near my guitars...somehow, when your own little brats to that, you just melt and smile and encourage them a bit... but you still have to put it away before they destroy it!

amen. Somehow my son cottoned onto the harmonica. its great fun trying to get a 3 year old to concentrate so you can jam...

I've also refused to let anyone buy those toy guitars. I chuck them out straight away.

I'm also getting married end of this year. And it is awesome. I can't wait. Organising the wedding is a pain though... its the first real test ?

Anyway, you can't go wrong with honesty. If you sit down and talk about your hobby/passion I'm sure you will be fine. But the truth is you won't have 4 hours to practice each day anymore... maybe an hour if your lucky ?

Your relationship comes first, but she has to meet you half way. My wife-to-be understands that this hobby is more than just a hobby and that I'm working towards a goal. And she has to support me in that. And she does.

If you want to maximise practice time though, be sure that she has a hobby OR working on her studies. That helps ?

Sometimes I convince her to out with her friends for some girls night fun. That means its just me, my fender and a night of uninterrupted jamming.

If your equipment would be hard to replace or was expensive then you should probably get it valued and consider insurance. Depending on the type of marriage contract that you are entering into you may want to stipulate axes, amps etc as something that you owned prior to the actual wedding date.

I also used to believe all this stuff. You will come to realize that your life will change. For the first few months and possibly years you will convince yourself that it is for the good and that it is making you happy. You will smile and laugh with your partner and you will be oh so grateful for the few hours you get to play your guitar or play some golf or whatever. And when you are mowing the grass or out shoppoing for all sorts of s#!t you will look forward to getting home and playing your guitar or playing some golf or whatever. And when you get home you will willingly do a few hours worth of chores while she does her duty and phones her mother or one of her pals and chats for an hour or two. And you will be happy. And in the evenings you will sit together in front of the fire watching the TV (probably Desp Housewives or summin) and you will have some good quality time with your wife (AWAY FROM YOUR GUITAR). And you will be happy. Later on in your life you will start getting up very early in the morning. You will buy yourself some good headphones or a AmpPlug or summin, and you will play guitar in a corner of the house away from where you could disturb someone. And you will be happy.

One day when you are up on the roof fixing something or trying to align the DSTV dish because you cant watch Desp Housewives or summin, you may look up at the clear sky or the clouds or the stars (not the sun) and you may long for the days when your time was your own. And then you may stand up and scream and shout "ENUFFF!". Or you will just diligently do your best and report on progress.
