Well, i am tying the knot on the 29th of August and i am wondering what to expect as far as the guitar playing part of my life is concerned. When do you guys find time to practice, how does buying of equipment happen now?
Please Help! :'(
DonovanB
well now...
firstly, congratulations!!
I don't know your situation, but I married someone who is not interested in guitar much, let alone music. I am glad for that, the last thing i want is my wife to be my groupie, thats just wierd for me. We have spoken much about it, and have come to the arrangement that if the music makes me the money, it can buy me the guitars. I try put more of it away to pay off the car etc anyway because of teh current situation, but as long as money doesn't come out of our regular budget for my GAS habit, its fine.
We did have (and still do) issues with time and practicing etc, but I am lucky that Mrs DonovanB understands how important this is to me and gives me space. I am still trying to get her to take up a hobby to do while I am busy but she's not biting.
I have also decided that if at any time this starts to get in the way of my marriage, it will all be sold and I will stop. I have ordered my priorities that way. and I know it will never come to that.
Good luck dude! be sure to post a pic of your wedding.

Congrats man! Married life is awesome ?
My wife has always been very supportive of my interests/passions so that helps a lot. But she's still very demanding of my time. It becomes important to practise "the right things" in the time you have available - to keep yourself progressing.
Balancing work, wife, friends and guitar is not easy but, for the sake of the wife, friends and guitar, it's worth it ?
Like Don said, find the wife something to do while you jam. Francis and I jammed Saturday away while Tanya took photos of her step-sister's new baby girl. Other times, I drop her off at a friend while I go and jam.
Good luck!

I feel the same way, if it start getting in the way, i walk away from it and i would not have a problem with that. Thanks for the advice and yes, i will be posting pics

Oh boy.......you're doomed!!!!!!!!.......can't have 2 loves at the same time............hahahahhha.....just kidding!!!! ?
As long as your wife understands that if you did not play guitar, and made music, it could have been a helluva lot worse....... my wife prefers having me at home playing my guitars, and now that my son, Eli, has started playing, she's even more over the moon! When the time comes and you have kids, (God bless them), make sure you spend an equal amount of time with them, I go to soccer with my son, swim with him, play cricket with him, and now we play guitar together, (well he's still in the learning stage)! Just make sure you have your "ducks in a row", we can't have it all, so you'll have to make some sacrifices........things that make you happy, your wife happy, and eventually, your kids happy.........!!!! Then you may not have to give up what you love.........
When I decided to buy my son's guitar and told my wife what it's gonna cost, she asked me: "Is that a good guitar??" What more could a guy ask for!
God bless, and congratulations in advance........let your family become your main audience first, and all other things will follow! ?

You know, i can't wait to have kids... I love the idea of me playing the guitar while my daughter sings along with me

if it wasn't for my wife i probably wouldn't be playing right now , a year before i meet her , i had all but given up on guitar , she bought me my first of my playing guitars , and trys to support me as much as she can , altough she still has a problem with gas , but is normally understanding

Tell your future wife that, my friend, and you're on your way to many happy years of guitar.......in fact, get her (your girlfriend/wife) to sing with you as well!!!! And tell her how beautiful she sings.......way to go man!!!!!!

Hey Congrats.....May God Bless you two richly ahead.....
I Have the fortunate situation of having both a musical wife and son. Initially it was only my wife practicing music. I have always done sound so I provided the support for her music career.
Once our son started growing up and took an interest in music....first at Drakies (Drakensberg Boys Choir) and now later in guitar, bass, drums and piano (not to mention his vocal abilities), we have jelled as a tight family with a strong common interest. We are involved in music in some way just about every day.
So...look also at the long term and maybe you will have to make some short term sacrifices as you embark on your journey together...but with patience the long term rewards will be worth the sort term sacrifices......(Think of Johnny and Jesse Cleg for example.....)

@ Tomcat, thank you so much for that. It has always been a dream for me to have a musical family. My Dad played the guitar but never took the time out to 'Jam' with me. I would love to do that with my kids and then have them one surpass me in their talents

Well I've been married now for 4.5 years. I think you should be honest and open about it before you get married. Tell your fiance that guitars and your music is your passion and that it will always be a part of you. Then ask her to give her take and honest opinion on it. There is nothing worse in a marriage once you've tied the knot and you try to change the other person or they try to change you. Rather be open about stuff before you get married (eg how many children you want etc...), that is worth gold in the long run.
Luckily I'm also fortunate(blessed) to have a wife that loves music and enjoys it with me. She has a beautiful voice and started playing piano 6 months ago. (Now there are 2 of us with GAS :-[ in the house)

BTW we are married 20 years this year and it only gets better....... ?arty:

Imagine how I feel.....3 x guitars....Bass...Drums.....Keyboards....pianos....ETC...ETC...ETC........We have a GAS epidemic in our house...
I have a simple policy.......I accept money from anyone..............ALL DONATION HEARTILY ACCEPTED....... ? ?

It does make shopping for Birthdays, Christmas, GAS-day etc very easy. One shop, Music Connection, something for everyone... ? ?

@ Dirkv
Keep your wife out of you GAS and guitar. Much easier to convince her about nice-to-haves if she has no understanding. ?
It could be detrimental to your GAS.
I have Wife and Kids and you negotiate/bargain that you have your own time.
Come home from work - Bath Kids, Have Supper, Listen to Stories, Tell Stories, Listen to Wife, Listen to Kids, Wash up dishes etc
20:00 - All the monsters in Bed
20:00 - 21:00 Quality time with Wife
21:00 - 23:00 My Time
All very flexible, beacuse you can arrive home and the wife has invited people for dinner ?
My wife is a teacher so I can move up "My Time" while she is marking books or setting exams.
Exam time is great time for guitarists.

Ja, we have had that talk already and she wants to go with me to pick out Guitar Stands and stuff, so i am pretty stoked about it, but i agree, honesty is always the best thing

Congratulations on the wedding and best of luck!
I’m also getting married this year. A few guys on the forum got it spot on (they must be married as well), honesty will get you very far.
My fiancé is not into guitars and our music taste is worlds apart. Since the wedding is less than 4 months away I found a bargain on a Peavey 6505+ head and knew that this will never happen in my lifetime again. So I just sat down with her and explained the entire deal to her. Surprisingly she said I can have it if that is what I want and makes me happy.
She also mentioned something about honeymoon in Zanzibar if I get the amp ?
It all boils down to communication between the two of you.
Good luck!
