One step ahead of you. Still no luck, but I'll keep trying.

sometimes the software you use needs to be pointed in the right direction, ie it looks for the wrong soundcard.
what windows are you using?

I'm using Win XP, I'm starting to wonder whether the problem might be a completely unrelated virus. I've selected the ASIO driver in the recording program.
The soundcard's test sample works as does anything else that can be played in Win Media Player. Unfortunately my preferred media player is Media Player Classic. I can also not get any audio for clips on the web to work.
I think it's just a matter of trying different settings. I wouldn't mind if I could disable the new soundcard and just use the old one for every day use, but that didn't seem to work.
Never fear, this is just a BIG learning curve.

You need to set XP to use the Edirol:
Control Panel > Sounds & audio devices > Audio Tab > Sound Playback
Set the "Default device" for both playback and recording to your Edirol and everything should automatically route to it.

Thanks, I did that when I installed it. I tink it might just be a virus, it's happend before.

you could also try disabling the onboard audio card.
or maybe change your preferred media player ?

I'm getting into the tutorials now and I'm having lots of fun. It's so exciting. Let me repeat that EXCITING. I'm also an artist so for me to see the actual music is realy groundbreaking. It's like photoshop for sounds!
I think what may have been the problem with the sound is that the soundcard is using my keyboard as speakers. Who knows realy. I've got speakers to put on my soundcard
(there're always spare speakers lurking somewhere) so I'll find out soon enough. Let the games continue....

For all the joys computers bring I still love the practcal side to things. For the solution to my audio files not working(those which can not be played in Media Player) I simply unplug the edirol soundcard. I think I do have a virus of sorts in some videos I downloaded off youtube, but I can listen to my music and watch videos on the internet again. Once again YAY!
I've downloaded a later edition driver for my soundcard, but haven't replaced it with the old one yet. Perhaps it will work better with the flash player for the internet. Is this a silly idea?

Have you got antivirus software? If you think you have a virus you need to check it with updated software and it should be fine.

I don't know if this will help, but in order for ASIO4all to work on my on board card I had to disable system sounds.
With that done the ASIO driver worked fine (low latency et al) but error sounds, start up, shut down and the like wouldn't work. I had to re-enable system sounds for WMP to work. A bit of a headache rebooting before the changes take effect each time though.

Okay, in future I won't advertise how computer illiterate I am. This is the status quo and hopefully I can improve on it:1)I can get sound from the net without the edirol soundcard.
2)If I want to download anything I have to take it to another computer to watch it(it works there)
3)My music will have to be played on another computer(the sound is distorted on my computer now with the old soundcard)
4)I plug in the edirol when I want to record
5)I learn how to record
The system sounds were/are already disabled, I don't mind if they're not there.I deleated the Asio driver to see if it would make ay difference. It didn't.
As for rebooting, the computer does that each time I want to look at downloaded items. Virus software is updated and says all is good.
One of my worst qualities is that I'm not fussy. Will have to change this, but it seems my needs at the moment are met one way or another.
Thanks for the input.
