I have this sepia toned memory of one of my first visits to a music store (I think it was Bothners or something, but it was in a mall then - this is back when the trees could still talk). They had some instructional books up there. I was looking at their covers and I thought I'd really like to get a blues guitar. Blues guitars are the ones with the funny wavy violin holes in the top.

Over 20 years ago? Probably Melody Inn in Cavendish - was a part of Bothner's. Had a record bar and a hifi section too. Simon Goodenough was the instrument sales guy there.

Lol! I shouldn't laugh - I can remember telling a friend just before I got my first guitar that I was going to buy a rhythm guitar because you could also tune it as a lead or bass guitar. :-[ We all start knowing nothing...

I used to take my first guitar (classical) in to a music shop to get re-strung for me... for a long long time :-[

I know what you mean...the first few days I had my guitar, I thought it sounded really awful but kept plugging away.

A friend of mine who also played, came over, strummed it for a few seconds and said..."did you tune this?"

Me, "yeah, I put new strings in yesterday"

He was still laughing about it days later....

I use to change strings as often as my elder brother did. He would put a new set of Fender Light on his CBS Strat , I would put his pre owned strings on my red Hofner and my pre-pre-owned Hofner strings would be put on my gut bucket acoustic. It became a national crisis if anybody broke a string because you could only get strings in sets so the pre-pre-pre owned gut bucket strings were kept as spares. I once broke a D string but only had a G spare so for I ended up playing with a very flexible unwound D on my guitar for a few weeks.
