Andy Statman - Old Brooklyn.
Well I like eclectic artists, and Statman seems to be about as eclectic as you can get. As far as I can tell he started out as a mandolin player in the so-called "newgrass" movement. That would put him in the same musical company as Edgar Meyer, Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, Tony Rice and etc. Like them he has monstrous chops, and like them he's not confining himself to the high lonesome sound (you haven't heard Bach until you've heard Meyer and Fleck play Bach). Somewhere along the line he started exploring the Eastern European Klezmer music of his Jewish ancestors and seems to have been listening to a lot of modern jazz whilst he did so. So he's now an unusual double act on mandolin and clarinet.
There's a guy named Jon Sholle playing guitar on this album (new to me, but apparently he's been around a while and gets around) and he's pretty tasty. Also a pedal steel player by the name of Marty Rifkin who is not the worst player you'll ever hear.
