Nick Lowe - Labour of Lust

I played a couple of Lowe songs at TJ's last night (including his anthem "Peace, Love and Understanding") and that seems to have put me in the mood. In the 70s Lowe was really one half of Rockpile, but the other half, Dave Edmunds, was signed to a different label, so they played together live as Rockpile - and enjoyed a considerable reputation as a live act - but the albums were issued under Lowe's or Edmunds's name. Lowe is a sharp songwriter, and Edmunds and Billy Bremner provide very fine guitar support.

On some versions (The Jerusalem ones I think) it's split into six tracks with no gaps in between. I guess it would have to be split over two sides at 60 mins+ in total.

But I happen to know that is the proper Southern Lord version. ?
No tracks no editing only the pure song the way the band intended.

Yeah, as far as I know that one and the 2003 Tee Pee version were the closest you can get to what they intended. Close but not exact.

So I guess the only split would be when the space on the first side runs out. Jeez, come to think of it, even getting 63 mins to fit on TWO sides of vinyl is a tight squeeze!

It's actually two records, with the entirety of Dopesmoker on sides A,B and C. D has live versions of Holy Mountain and Sonic Titan.

Oh, and this was mastered from the original studio tapes, that could only take 22 minutes of recording at a time. So as far I can tell, this is the most definitive version available.

Indeed. I actually missed the Southern Lord sale, and thought I'd never have the chance to own one. Luckily, Barney from SA Vinyl was able to track one down for me.

Songs For Desert Refugees

This a fund raiser for people in the war torn Southern Sahara. It's also a sampler of works from a perhaps unexpectedly vibrant (and now endangered) musical scene. The best known artists here would be Tinariwen who kick off proceedings with a track not available on other CDs and that is instantly recognisable as Tinariwen but also has unusually spacy guitars.

Other contributors include the Tinariwen spin off Terakraft and two younger acts currently carving out a reputation for themselves - Bombino and Tamikrest.

After hearing Ali Fakar Toure and especially Tinariwen I've been wanting to explore more of this fascinating and potent guitar-based music. So this gives some useful pointers as well as being worthwhile in it's own right.
