Listening to The Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine. They're quite highly rated so I feel it's my duty once in a while to see if I "get" them yet...nope. Still don't get them. Constant high pitched screaming is just irritating, nonexistent flat guitar tone... oh well.

I've been listening again to Jason Mraz's album "we sing, we dance, we steal things". Those arrangements are amazing. I love a good brass section.

Blk Jks - Albums called After Robots... As Pitchfork sums up "a hugely ambitious album, with swooping forays into kwaito, ska, reggae, ambience, jazz, prog, and furor."
Guys are from Soweto and making a bit of a splash in the US. They're loos as hell, all over the place but definitely got something, hugely ambitious stuff. Odd thing is that a lot of the reviews note the styles that will be familiar to SA ears as the out there components. Someone called them an African Vampire Weekend - which P's me off no end. NO END. >☹ >☹

I enjoy it. It's different to the others... A lot of "soppy" stuff, so some might not like it. I'm really enjoying it.

There is a super cool, Funky Fuzzed version of Crossroads ?

A decent album none the less!

Teddy Thompson A Piece Of What You Need

Teddy Thompson is the son of Richard and Linda Thompson. It might be easy for critics to have a go.... can't sing like his Mother, can't write and play like his Father. This may be why Teddy's career seems to have taken a while to get going - even though he's not tried to do what his parents do and has looked to create his own musical identity.

This album, it seems, is the breakthrough into bigger time, and he's been out on the road supporting Elton John.

He isn't aping either of his parents. His songs, his singing are his own. It's hard to comment on his playing (which I've heard is something more than proficient), mostly because we don't get a lot of information about who is playing which parts on which track. Two tracks have the old man taking all the electric guitar chores - so that doesn't help much either.

Teddy's songs are a sort of smart pop (with help from the production by Marius de Vries). His lyrics don't have the density of poetic allusion and metaphor that is Father's songs often have. Which is not a problem - there is still intelligence there, and Teddy's clearly out to be his own man. But it would have been nice to have the lyrics in the CD booklet. Instead you have to go to his website. Maybe this is cost cutting - saving money on the packaging and layout. It's a little annoying though.

He DOES seem to have inherited the Pater's less than rosy outlook - but then as he himself has said, there are relatively few convincing happy songs.

Early days yet - but this is looking pretty promising. Smart songs, well sung, good playing.

Ironically he's signed to Universal - the same company his dad walked away from in 2000 to tread an independant path.

That's a big ask... it also why I prefer Mastodon's latter day output because there's well, singing on the albums now. Oddly enough was listening to the new Eels album this morning (El Hombre Lobo) - lots of raunchy cool distorted vocals. Same with Them Crooked Vultures - John Paul Jones, Josh Homme and Dave Grohl... nice vocals that actually sound heavier than Death barking even though they're falsetto half the time...

Fairport Covention - House Full

Fairport had a long run, starting from their first album, of not having the same line-up 2 albums running. They managed to briefly break that streak in 1970 when a live recording was made in between the realase of the Full House album and Richard Thompson's departure (whereafter it was back to musical chairs). This live recording, made towards the end of a year when they had toured almost non stop, captures them in impressive live form. This was the period during which Thompson and fiddler Dave Swarbrick were pushing each other hard on stage, but there's more to this album than musical one-upmanship. The band is very tight, especially on the breakneck jigs that they were given to at the times. The Pegg/Mattacks rhythm section is clicking and have great dynamics, and Simon Nicol's marvellous complementary playing - especially underneath some of Thompson's solos - goes to show how underestimated the art of rhythm guitar playing is and that such players should get more recognition.

I love Liege & Lief, but I found Dave Swarbrick's vocals kind of annoying (it was him right?). It stopped me really enjoying the other Fairport stuff I've heard. How do you feel about his voice?

What an album.. Monte's version of Little Wing is jaw dropping, and there is a beautiful song called "Midlife Matinee", it's one of those songs that I dream of writing one day... just so so good.

Monte has to be one of the finest guitarists/songwriters to ever walk this earth...
