Last night I got emailed Richard Haslop's "best of" list for 2012. Late, or seemingly so, as usual and for reasons he explains. It hammered home how broad the world of music is and how broad a selection we have these days. Also he gave Ry Cooder high marks again. Thus inspired I am having a Ry Cooder day - several of his more recent albums.: Election Special (which made this year's top 20), Pull Up Some Dust and Sit Down (previous year's record of the year), My Name Is Buddy and Chavez Ravine.
Oh man,
Chavez Ravine is such a rich stew. All sorts of things going on. Cooder has such a broad musical palette. I'm guessing a lot of this is informed by Cuban or Chicano sounds - but I don't know much about those genres. But fab grooves on some numbers. The players include "Little Willie G". I'd thought that was a name that Robbie Robertson invented for his song "Somewhere Down That Crazy River", but it turns out Little Willie sang with the
Three Midniters who came from East LA and were a precursor to the likes of Blood, Sweat and Tears.
