Dire Straits - the first album, a perennial favourite of mine. They sound very different with Pick Withers on drum, he's more understated than Terry Williams and the session drummers that came later - less thump, more finesse, a marvellous groove. Knopfler's guitar sound is more straight forward than it would become, more wiry. He gets in a fab solo on "In The Gallery", and the overdubbed guitars at the end of "Lions" are marvellous. "Sultans of Swing" is better off (and actually swings) without the bombast of the live versions - mostly due to Withers' lighter touch.
Agreed. A fantastic album. Lovely slide guitar in Water of Love too. Still one of my all time favourites.
