Unfortunately not that I have seen - most of the live stuff I have heard of his has been bootlegs from UK festivals and then tracks he's done for Radio 1's Live Lounge.

Jose Gonzalez. I can't get enough of his stuff lately. Reminds me quite strongly of mid-1990s Anton Calitz (a seriously underrated local artist, to my mind - Dead Slugs & Strawberries was fantastic).

Saw him live in Norwood a few years ago - blew me away. Supremely talented and to get all those sounds from one guy playing... met him afterwards and got my CD signed - amazing night.

Martin Simpson - Prodigal Son

The title of this album puzzled me. I was also struck by the distinctly American flavour on several numbers. A bit of Googling revealed to me that Simpson had spent 15 years working in the USA (with the likes of Kelly Joe Phelps) and returned to Britain in the early 2000s. Hence the name of this 2007 release.

Simpson is a very fine player. On this album he shows his chops on banjo, slide and lap steel and they are considerable. He has a sikly smooth style and seems as at home on the more English numbers as he does on the American flavoured numbers. The guitars are beautifully recorded.

I particularly enjoyed his playing on the moving instrumental "She Slips Away" (where he combines fingerstyle and slide) and the instrumental passages on "The Granemore Hare".

The album is eclectic, extending from English traditional pieces to Americana such as "Good Morning Mr Railroad Man" (revived and recorded by Ry Cooder) and Randy Newman's "Louisiana 1927", but in Simpson's hands the various genres sit well alongside each other and nothing seems too incongruous here. The guitar playing is very strong throughout, and there are excellent contributions from guest backing artists including Jackson Browne, Andy Cutting and Danny Thompson.

It is a great album! She Slips Away is such a beautiful song. I enjoy listening to the album because I can remember all the storeis that went with them.. Not one of them is really just a song.. They all relate to something that was experienced.

+1 on the quality of recordings

John Martyn. Two albums - Solid Air and Bless The Weather.

Solid Air is supposed to the Martyn album par excellence, his defining work, his master piece. Bless The Weather is the immediate predecessor, and I'm starting to think it's the better of the two. There's a satisfying wholeness to Bless The Weather, it's very well integrated. On two levels. The first level is the way that the album hangs together so organically - it has great cohesion. The second level is the way that on the best performances on the album everything meshes together so well. Solid Air has some great individual tracks (especially the title track) and more instrumental fireworks, but it lacks the satisfying cohesion of it's predecessor.

PS: Both albums feature the marvellous Danny Thompson on bass. I'm a big fan of Danny's and have heard him playing lots of things with lots of people in lots of styles and always enjoyed his playing, but there was something extra going on with him and Martyn, a kind of telepathy, an instinct for each other's playing that neither of them, despite their other considerable achievements, quite had with anybody else.

Dave von Ronk. Wish I could get more of his stuff - managed to tap 2 tracks somewhere don't ask where! Quickly worked out Hesitation Blues. So cool! Without all the frilly bits - someone else can play that of course ...

Wow! There's a blast from the past. "The Mayor of MacDougal Street". An important figure in the early 60s Greenwich Village folk scene that also gave us Phil Ochs, Peter, Paul and Mary and some bloke by the name of Zimmerman.
