Die Lemme -
Rigtingbefok
Well, that's what it's called, OK? It's quite amusing if you have one of those car players that shows the names of the tracks etc. At regular intervals you get this rude Afrikaans word shining out the middle of the dash. Oh well... I suppose you can say it's German for "GPS failure". Somebody might believe you.
If I have an identifiable group of musical heroes it's the guys who fought the against the odds created by the various demons of economics, disco fever, apathy and government interference and kept on making good, articulate and sometimes downright noisy music in SA in the late 70s into the 80s (and no! I DO NOT include Bles Bridges in that number).
Gary Herselman would fit that demographic. He used to front a band by the name of Die Kerels. A little later, operating under the name "Piet Pers", he was playing bass in Die Gereformeerde Blues Band. Later still he reimagined himself as a drunk, down and out country singer/songwriter and played under the name "Archie Pelago".
And now he's back (or still here) with this.... I think "project" is the right word. Die Lemme are not a band as we understand that word. There are nine producers involved here. Forty musicians across the eighteen tracks - from "ou manne" (Gereformeerde Blues Band drummer/trombonist Jannie "Hannepoot" van Tonder) to happening-right-now types.
It's vintage but it's right now. It's got a distinctly South African vibe to it. Deefestees can buy it and not be ashamed because there's decent Afrikaans songs on it. There's a clever and amusing cover of "ZX Dan".
