Nick Drake - Made to Love Magic

A compilation, mostly discarded tracks and alternate takes, some of it no better than bootleg quality. Contains the infamous handful of recordings that Drake made shortly before his death. They're not in the same league as the material that made it onto the three studio albums that he finished and released in his lifetime. Head for those albums first.

PJ Harvey - Stories From the City. Stories From the Sea.

I think she's overrated, but still pretty good (you can be both). I like this more than some discs of hers that I've heard.

I really like a lot of her stuff. Stories From the City... is probably her most pop-rock. Which others have you heard?
My favourites are Dry, Rid of Me (these two are quite raw) and To Bring You My Love. There's also a disk of her 4-track demos from the Rid of Me era which is good. I've never really got into the latest album.

I've got the one we're discussing and Let England Shake. I've heard several other discs of hers over the years - can't recall which ones, though definitely Rid Of Me. One thing you have to say about her is she doesn't get stuck in a rut.

I'm warming to this album, but I think the track with Thom Yorke taking the lead vocal is out of place.

Ja, she's never one to make the same album twice. There are some very good songs on Stories. I haven't been able to listen to Let England Shake (her latest) properly yet; I always end up putting something else on.

I suspect that I'm going to live to regret that remark. And it's not her fault. anyway. The problem is really the British music press who fall over themselves in a reach for superlatives every time she so much as belches.

That's why I generally ignore the press and just listen to the music; often the older stuff that they're not going on about right now. Good music is good music irrespective of hype and all of that.

Today
Joan Armatrading - Joan Armatrading. This is her third album, it's terrific and it casts a long shadow over the rest of her career. Full of typically slippery Jerry Donohue guitar work - notably his solo on "Tall In The Saddle" - he sounds like a pedal steel player in places. Bryn Haworth adds fab slide to ~~"Somebody who Loves You"~~ "Like Fire". At this stage Armatrading was just playing acoustic rhythm guitar on record, but I've seen her live and let me tell you, she can rip the frets right out of that sucker.

van der Want / Letcher - Bignity. I'm enjoying the lyrics, the songwriting on this. Sonically it's typically Letcher.

Joe Bonamassa, Steve Vai, Carlos Santana, Glenn Hughes {What pipes, man!} Zakk Wylde, Metallica, Chickenfoot and more.
Two versions of Highway star, two of Smoke on the Water.
One Smoke is by Flaming Lips, like a disco band - and I wonder what Blackmore thinks of this one!!

New Soundgarden album 'King Animal'. Really enjoying it. The singles are not indicative of the album at all and some of the slowburners might not take with me but for the most part, if you like Soundgarden there's some GREAT tunes on there.

Edit: there's a new Deftones out as well which I will check out for sure.

A definite on my list of new stuff to listen to.
Didn't know about the Deftones one; will have to check it out to. Diamond Eyes had some good stuff on it; hope this does too.
