Smiling Men With Bad Reputations Mike Heron.

This is rare fun. The album has huge stylistic breadth and yet somehow hangs together as a whole, even though he's got township horns (courtesy of Dudu Pukwana) on one track, The Who on another, strings and Indian percussion on another.

Boy I'm getting around at present....

Solid Air by John Martyn. I love this record. This was recorded at a time when Martyn was morphing from a folk guitarist into... something else, a bit of rock, a bit of blues, a bit of jazz, a bit of folk... and an echoplex. Lovely chilled jazzy compositions on this one, and on "I'd Rather Be The Devil" you get one of the earlier examples of his wonderfully musical use of echo with guitar.

I also like that he gives the sidemen a lot of room to express themselves - notably keyboard player Rabbit Bundrick and the always fab Danny Thompson on double bass.

I've always thought Muse sounded like Queen. United States of Eurasia sounds like a Queen tribute...

The more I listen to it, the more I like it, although I kinda miss the raw guitar wizardry of their previous albums.
Still a good album though, just different! ?

Also, if you like hard alternative rock, go listen to a band called The Butterfly Effect. Good stuff as well.

Not their best in my opinion, but it may be a "grower". But its not a radical departure of their sound, so if you like it I'd suggest their debut, Showbiz and Origin of Symmetry as the next additions

I was gonna say that if you want to give Muse a chance, as a not-yet-fan, one of their live DVDs would totally be the way to go, AFAIC. Hullabaloo or HAARP. Hullabaloo's harder, HAARP is lighter, but they both give an indication of JUST how good Muse is live, and why the crowd seems to be having such a religious experience every time they play. For me, their studio work is always disappointing compared with the live renditions. And you get to watch Matthew Bellamy make the studio stuff come alive, as a bonus.

Also got the new Muse. I have to say that I am suitably impressed. It is quite a departure from the earlier stuff, but wow, what talent. I love how they incorporate some classical pieces into their songs. "United States of Eurasia" is like a queen cross borat soundtrack with chopin at the end, I really dig it.

Folk is the New Black Janis Ian. I bought this.... hmmm some time ago. A quick bit of googling gives a release date of early 2006, but it feels like a lot longer since I listened to this. Certainly it's been over 2 years.

Can't find a good reason for not listening to it for all that time because this is very good record. Excellent songwriting, she is in fine voice and the production is the sort of non-production that works well when you have a bunch of good songs and good players in the studio.
