Sigur Ros - interesting stuff for those with the attention span. I have one album called Takk. Reminds me of Cocteau Twins meets BT. But it's too slow for me, usually I don't make it past song 2.

I'm listening to Exivious a lot lately. I guess they're not all that well known - jazz metal in the Cynic vein but instrumental (win!). Arty metal by thinking, highly skilled musicians, worth checking out.

Apart from Miles Davis etc. I'm listening to Funeral for a Friend - Welcome Home Armageddon.
I'd say they're one of the few emo bands worth listening to.

Well I was driving home this arvey quite happily listening to Elvis Costello. Then that CD came to an end and there was a click whilst the changer changed, and then this most amazing sound started pouring out of the speakers.

Kaleidoscope. I'd forgotten about this set that I got for Christmas, but at least I put one of the discs into the car player.

David Lindley's first band with any kind of profile. From back in the 60s. Amazing stuff. San Francisco goes to Beirut for a holiday and brings some souvenirs back.

Richard Thompson - 1000 Years of Popular Music

Here we have Thompson with percussionist Michael Jerome and occasional vocals from Judith Owen travelling a close to 1000 years time line. Starting off with the earliest surviving English song ("Sumer is Icumen In" - middle English actually) taking in a ballad about Henry V, an industrial revolution song about scab labour, music hall, Gilbert and Sullivan ("There Is Beauty" from The Mikado), Jerry Lee Lewis and The Who and climaxes with .... are you sitting down.... "Oops! I Did It Again." (which, he argues, is built on a chord progression typical of Tudor music).

There's nothing like it. The ambition of his playing and vision here is audacious. He reduces Gilbert and Sullivan to a guitar and two voices. He pulls off the rock and roll stuff brilliantly and his performance of Prince's "Kiss" is remarkable.

(PS: There are two distinct offerings with this title. One - what I've been listening to - is the original live recording of what was then a novelty show. The second is a DVD from a couple of years later, by which time demand for the novelty was such that he had to tour it. The second embraces the same concept but doesn't have an identical song list).

Who isn't, and when? Great band. There's a Q & A with Brian May in a recent Uncut (March or April, I think), particularly interesting chat about how he gets his vibrato going. Pretty similar to mine, but then, I'm not a rock god. Not even on Guitar Hero... ?

Was having a discussion with my cousin last night on how awesome and intense their lyrics are. Man they were geniuses. He brought up how "The invisible man" made him think about how no one can really know you (or something like that) and I thought "waiting for the hammer to fall" might be alluding to the Cold War. I thought "the invisible man" was about the book about the invisible man, but hey, could be both I guess.

Listening to two albums I had when younger and got the cd's just recently:
Iggy Pop - New Values. I must get more of this guy. I've got a lot of vinyl of Stooges but I think I'll just order the cd'.
Robert Fripp - Exposure. Here comes the flood is really a great song. But I cant say that I'm a Robert Fripp fan. I just liked this album.

Fripp's solo stuff is very much experimental. Although this album a bit better than some others, Lots of Killer musos on this one, Peter Hammil, Brian Eno, Phil Collins (Before he became The White Earth Wind and Fire) and a strange choice of Darryl Hall (Of Hall and Oates) on vocals.

Peter Gabriel prefers this version of HCTF to the one he recorded on his first Album. Google this song and see some good live renditions through the years by PG.
